Route advice from..

My final destination is the Baltimore are; but I'm trying to decide between heading West out of Burlington into the Adirondacks against a South run through Vermont.

Assuming I go south, what are the recommend routes and/or must see spots? Looking at the Google Maps I'm willing to go as far East as route 100.

Couple of suggestions

Thru Harriman Park

Include Hawk Nest at the botton

Hawks Nest NY

New Jersey Side of Del Water Gap

A nice road thru Connecticut

Can't go wrong routing yourself thur the Catskills

I would avoid going over the G Washington Bridge if you go that direction and take the Tappanzee Bridge instead.

Avoiding the White Plains area is a good thing, which you will probably do anyways.

When I travel that way I head out to Scranton and then head south crossing the Hudson at Newburgh. You can cross over in Burlington and have that licked

I would recommend heading over to Amsterdam,NY and taking rt30 south all the way to rt17 head west and pick up either rt 97 or rt 191. We took rt191 to rt6 over to Scranton and hit the I81 south from there to Frederick, Maryland. It's a hell of a ride for 1 day but it's not bad. RT97 is another road I want to check out sometime. I hope this helps we had a blast.

@Willie, looks like some nice riding but I don't plan to get that close to New York. The Hawk's Nest area is in range though.

@Bigbeavk, That area is nice riding I've been through there before and might hit it again this trip. The Andes Hotel andeshotel.com is a cool overnight spot along that route.

Come on Vermonters, I still need some help with the Vermont section of the ride!

I ride in Vermont all of the time, and if given a choice when going North / South, I'd shoot over into the Adirondacks via ferry and make a beautiful day of it on the twisty county roads. They won't get you there in a hurry, but you'll have a hell of a ride.

The best N/S continuous state road in Vermont is Rte 100. It is scenic but not great otherwise. Hell, I-91 is a very pretty ride down through Vermont and there is seldom more than one car in sight. If you want to make tracks and still see scenery, it's pretty hard to beat.

Rte 22 is a good way to bypass the Pittsfield, Mass area, which is well worth bypassing. Then when you get down into the Hudson Valley of NY you have several options to get south to the Catskills, from the Taconic Parkway (scenic highway speed cruising) to a back roads route through villages and dales.

The Delaware Gap is nice, but it dumps you into an area at the bottom of boring farm land roads or else interstate slab to get out of there.

@Fred W, thanks for the input. If I decide to head south out of Burlington I would head for the Catskills pretty quick after crossing the southern VT boarder.
