Routing power from the glove box?

I was looking throught the fourms trying to find out how most guys are routing their power cords out of the glove box and didn't come up with much info so i thought that i would put out a post to find out.

If you are routing the power cord out of the top do you have any issuse with pinching the cord or stressing the glove box lid?

If you are routing the cord out the bottom of the glove box, are you just using the rubber gromett with the drain hole in it. Does this rubber plug come out to allow for modifications so that you can run your power chord through it?

What I did was install a powerlet outlet just behind (towards the rider) the glove box. I used that to run power into my tank bag through a bulkhead fitting. I powered the powerlet by using the glove box outlet feed. I had a Starcom1 installed in the glove box, so I removed the OE 12v outlet from the glove box and used the hole to route cables into the glove box.

I also have 12v power routed into my Givi E52. When I'm not traveling with the tankbag, then I have the Givi set up to charge cell phones, etc.

The outlet in the glove box has a 3 amp fuse which is very weak... you can't power much (my Garmin blows the fuse - I need a 5 amp fuse - the traffic antenna is probably the source of the draw). When I was plugging into the outlet, I was running the wire out the lid and closing it. It caused a minor line to form into the wire without any real damage (a pinch). If you ever damaged the lid, you will be kicking yourself. Since I blew 3 fuses in the same day, I decided to run a dedicated power supply to the GPS off the battery (Garmin has a kit). No more stressing the lid etc. If you want to tap into the power supply from the outlet, I highly suggest you run off from the battery or something else in order to get some real power.

My cheapo Garmin has been powered out of the glovebox over two FJRs and never had an issue. Never saw the need for the rubber grommet and just removed it for easier cord routing out. No moisture, even living in the PNWet.

If you're so inclined, you can tap the cig lighter wires in front of the glovebox for small power needs. Eliminates the need for routing out of the 'box.

I use a USB adapter with a thin wire USB cable that runs to my Aqua Box. I can run my GPS or my phone in the box. You do need a powerlet adapter for the GPS so the GPS thinks it has power from a Garmin cable. I just run the thin wire out the top of my box. No water, not stress.

I took a look at my garmin and it only runs on a 3 amp fuse so i think that i'll remove the rubber grommet and route the power cable out the bottom. I found a tapered rubber stopper that i'll run the cord through just to keep the water out of the glove box and to keep smaller items from falling out.

That's what I did and it's worked well for me....2 years and no problems.

Since I don't have heated grips I installed a marine grade 12v outlet there where the heated grip control is. I just tapped into the lead to the outlet there in the glove box. So i have one in the box and one out of the box. I have never used them both at the same time and have only used it to charge my cell phone so the fuse has never given me a problem. I did this on my last FJR with no ill effects also.

I use a dremel to route a groove for my Garmin and my ipod and escort radar all out of the glove box with no issues, 2 bikes and no problems...

Are you saying your run all 3 of these simultaneously from the glovebox outlet?

Out of the glove box I run my Garmin and my Valentine radar. I plug a one and two out. works great, no problems

Correct, I am able to use a pigtail splitter and power all 3 with no problems, I hate routing all three grooves to allow the door to close but it works fine... Not sure how Yamaha thought you were going to use the power outlet without keeping the glove box open.

I was looking at the glovebox outlet and thought the same thing, how to use it without leaving it open. Did they think it was for use when stopped? You could try to charge your cell phone if you could fit it inside. I bought a small led flashlight that you plug into a cigarette lighter socket to charge and thought that would be handy on the bike but the glove box outlet is larger than a standard lighter socket so it is useless for that as well.

There are many great ideas here to ponder. But, if I wanted to hard-wire my Garnin car-charge adapter (I bought the one with no connection, ready to be wired in), could I possibly route it from a spare fuse/accessory connection on the fuse block or something - other than directly to the battery? Just thinking...

And, while that glove box is a cool trick (love the lock-when-key-is-off feature) I have to agree with Bluedog - why would Yamaha create such a thing and 1) expect you to leave it open to charge a device because 2) they make it so small that you can't possibly fit the charging adapter AND the phone you want to charge?!

While I don’t consider it to be a perfect or permanent solution (I will get my power sorted when I have my luggage sorted), I recently picked up one of these at Wal-Mart:

It has a very low-profile plug part leaving more room in the glove compartment, has both mini and micro USB chargers on the other end and, perhaps most importantly, the cords are very flat and flexible allowing for virtually pinch-free running out of the glove box. It leaves enough room to stuff in my Samsung Nexus S (plugged in) and I was pleased to find out I can run voice navigation through bluetooth even with the phone stuffed in there kind of vertically and the lid closed.

Not bad for $16 CDN.
