In pictures I've seen there appears to be a black plug/grommet on the left side of the engine behind the the shift rod/linkage at the same height as the clutch slave cylinder. This plug is just to the left of a triangular-shaped engine mounting bracket with three bolts.

Is this a plug or is there some component projecting out through the crankcase from the shift drum?

The triangular-shaped three bolt mounting bracket has changed from earlier models. On the '06 it looks like an equilateral triangle. On my '04 it's triangular but not symmetrical.

Yamaha has made lots and lots of changes on this model. There must be many, many manhours of design work in this model upgrade.

I'm not sure what it is for..but the "plug" us a small screw on cover that has two wires coming out of it..a blue one and a red one..(there may be more, as my garage is dark..)

They go into a black plastic sleeve and disapear somewhere farther in the back of the motor. My guess is that if the older bikes do not have them, that this is part of the digital gear indicator system.
