My LSU friends have dogged me cuz Bama is paying Saban $4mill a year. Their jaws dropped when I explained to them that Bama pulls in between $3-4mill per homegame from ticket sales, concessions, parking, merchandise, and tv rights. With 95,000+ fans in the stands that money is easily made.

As one who recently moved to Baton Rouge, I can safely say the LSU fans have an irrational hate for Saban. Their comments are pure crap related to his departure rather than his coaching ability. They would have gladly paid $4 million (or more) to keep him in BR and winning national championships.

And if they don't know how much these schools make from a game, then they just haven't paid close attention (or don't know simple math). A nationally televised game can bring in more than a million per school from the broadcast network (assuming it's big) alone.

If I were you, I'd tell them they're just like discarded lovers who want their significant other back. Then stand back and watch them squirm.

Most of the LSU fans I know have a hate for Saban. Here's a point they HAVE NOT considered and REFUSE to admit the REALITY of: that when Bama was talking to the Dolphins about interviewing Saban, LSU made NO EFFORT to bring him back. If they really wanted him they could've made a bid but they stayed in denial. AND, if they are SO HAPPY with Les Miles, they why would they care where Saban goes to coach? All of my LSU fans have told me how powerful and awesome is their team and coach... so should it make a difference to them even if Bear Bryant was raised from the dead and resumed his dutes in Tuscalosa?

I don't hate LSU fans, but their view on reality is very, very, very distorted. Saban left LSU for the challenge the NFL offers.... same reason why Spurrier left Florida, and same reason why he took the S. Carolina job.

My uncle is a football coach and has coached at LSU and Auburn under the Bowden sons and other notable SEC coaches. From what he's told me of what goes on behind the fairytale-land of what you read and see in the news and on ESPN, coaches look at a position AS A JOB that HAS RESPONSIBILITIES. That's why these coaches can leave a school and go coach at another school in the same conference.

Why the hell do we slam coaches that do this in the sports world, but in the business world we don't care? I mean if a CFO leaves Coke and goes to work at Pepsi we'd understand it's a business move. I feel that most of the moves in college sports are based on business decisions.

I think deep down inside LSU fans know that once Bama starts pulling in top-nat'l recruits (which has begun) and Bama has a top nat'l coach (signed, sealed, delivered) they realize there will be serious competition in the SEC West again.

As an ex-athlete at an SEC school, it pisses me off to no end that coaches can leave for more money or an NFL job yet I had to sit out a year because I transferred. Problem is there have been so many abuses of the system in the past that there is simply no way to allow players to transfer schools without some kind of penalty or a LOI means nothing. I dont know the solution but it pissed me off I had to sit out a year simply because I wanted a better education and the coach at my old school had left due to some NCAA issues.

I think many people get pissed when a coach leaves yet dont care when a C-level exec leaves because in general they dont care or are to ignorant to know the impact. Think of how many Tennesseans follow the team yet never went to school there...it's pride for your state. Hard to get fired up when the CEO of Ebay leaves however, unless you have stock in that company or do business with them. It's much easier for the avergae Joe to identify with a school that represents their state than a CEO. Ask a Tennessean who the HC is in FB and I bet 80% of them know it but ask them who the CEO of Dollar General, Fed-Ex or Goody's is (all HQ in TN) and I bet less than 5% know, if that.

No doubt $aban will start pulling in the recruits and I think it was a great hire for Bama if they can hold on to him. Now Petrino....don't get me started on that slime ball.

The part that bothers me is the breaking of the contracts, both by the coaches and the schools. I mean really, what value is any contract? I have had jobs that required a contract, and I fulfilled the contract fully, I thought that is what it was for.

Today in high profile sports,both college and professional, why even have contracts. Coaches and athletes become unhappy with their salary or position and demand to renegotiate their contract. It really cheapens the whole process.

As much as I luv the fjr, I bleed orange, and my priorities are Big Orange Football first, FJR second. Of course there are times when I ride the FJR to Jeffrey's Sports Bar in Alpharetta to be amonst others from the Vol Nation.

I watch football for different reasons than most. For me, it's about the strategy and ability to execute. So, I tend to follow coaches more than I root for any particular team.

I happened to be at Mich. State as a grad student when Saban was there. Having grown up in SEC country, I was ecstatic to hear he was coming south and thought he would wreak havoc in an already strong conference, so I watched with an "I told you so" attitude as he did just that with LSU, and now Alabama. I don't really care where he coaches, he's always going to make his team competitive, even with mediocre players (not intended as a *** at Alabama, they're far from average). The same goes for Spurrier.

So, in that regard, Saban is worth the money. And any coach that can win games, or at least make them competitive, is worth some bucks as long as fans throw their lot in with a school's team and are willing to shell out money to watch them play.

I think the real question is closer to dbvolfan's comments. Why are people willing to pay so much to see a game that so grossly lines the pockets of the strategists (i.e. coaches) and administrators while giving the strategy executors (players) nothing? If you've thrown your big-dollar allegiance into a school for life, shouldn't you support the ones who entertain you? Many of us know how tough it is to get cash while in college. Why not make it a pay-for-play system? Put a cap on a school's ability to spend like the NFL does and let them work it out as a revenue sharing system among all involved.
