If you had more time, you could add a few detours and have a great sample of riding through the Central Coast:
  • SR-25 from Hollister to King City
  • County G-14 from King City to Jolon
  • Naciemento-Fergusson Road from Jolon to SR-1 (named one of the Ten Best Motorcycling Roads in the World by Motorcyclist magazine)
  • SR-1 to Santa Rosa Creek Road in Cambria
  • Santa Rosa Creek Rd. to SR-46, to Vineyard, Templeton and Homestead to SR-41
  • SR-41 to SR-229, a little bit of motorcycling heaven (right Carver?)
  • SR-229 south to SR-58 west and back to US-101
  • US-101 south to SR-166
  • SR-166 east for 15 miles to Tepusquet Road
  • Tepusquet for 16 miles to Foxen Canyon
  • Foxen Canyon to SR-154
  • SR-154 south to US-101 in Santa Barbara
OK, I'm printing that out and gonna do a routing exercise in MapSource for future riding fun!!!!! Thanks for that!

Here's some more great Central Coast motorcycling roads:

  • Carmel Valley Road - County G-16 - from Carmel on the coast to Greenfield on US-101
  • G-14 from King City, between Lake San Antonio and Lake Nacimiento, to Paso Robles
  • Harris Grade Road, from SR-135 in Santa Maria to Lompoc
  • Santa Rosa Road - on SR-1 a mile or so south of SR-246 in Lompoc, west to Buelton
  • Jalama Road - on SR-1 four miles south of SR-246 in Lompoc. A fun 13 mile ride to the beach. Great burgers at the campground store, too.
  • SR-58, from Santa Margarita to McKittrick at SR-33. 72 miles of seriously fun riding, with twisties on each end, and high-speed straights (with woopdees) in the middle. Turn off your music and turn up your radar detector (although I've never seen a LEO on this road...)
  • Cerro Noroeste/Frazier Park Rd. from SR-166 to I-5. Too far south and inland to be a Central Coast ride, but an excellent motorcycling road.

Wow! I wish I had more time this weekend. :(

EDIT - Printing as well, maybe good roads to burn up those cheap PR2's I bought from Derby...ESB are you leading? Remember, I am not as fast as you are, I am just a rider with moderate skill, who still enjoys the twisty stuff.

All perfect roads G16 is one of my favorites. At least once a year I do an overnight trip hitting almost of of these roads. It ends up being about 700 miles for me and a perfect two day ride. I will be hitting the 33 and 166 this weekend with the wife :yahoo:

Uhh thanks Brian, but, your route is not so great for me, it's my backyard!

Different strokes for different folks, that's the ticket!

Enjoy it all, but always be safe & try not to earn an Outstanding Performance Award (= a certified driving citation!).

I wouldn't let a little gravel scare you aware. just be easy on the throttle and VERY easy on the brakes, and no attempts at quick direction changes. The gravel sections are usually quite short

Hwy 1 is just to nice to pass up on.

As for 405s - yes - due to longer carpool lanes on than on I-5

From Thousand Oaks, if you have time, I'd head due south into the Malibu mountains, the hit PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy) run down to you hit the santa monica freeway, then head over to the 405 (check out Rock House while in the mountain, beware of squidly types going way to fast)

In San Diego county, if you have time, take 76west from I-15 and go up Palomar Mtn. my favorite route is to go up the south grade, down the east grade, 76east to 79north, head out towards Borrego Springs (CO Hwy 2), then stay to the right to stay on S2, then head west on 78 up to Julian. If you have time, then 79 south to Sunrise Hwy. If time constrained, take 8 west back home, or continue south to Campo Rd/ Hwy 94 west back to San Diego. There are lots of fun side roads, but for an intro that is a nice ride

Have fine while you are down here. My parents are in town fo rthe long weekend, otherwise I'd offer to take you out for a ride. Feel free to PM for San Diego and other nearby area riding suggestions

So what time are u leaving and which way are you going?

See HERE check post #21 maybe you could stop and get it on the way...

I envy all the great riding you have so close to home, KJ! Unless I want to hit Angeles Crest with all the posers, I have an hour drive minimum to get to any road remotely fun to ride.

All great suggestions for roads, although everything in and around LA pretty much sucks. Since your staying in Thousand Oaks, you could also ride 101 to 210 to 15 to route around the LA basin. This gives you the option of Ortega Highway (74) from Lake Elsinore to San Juan Capistrano, or continuing down to Palomar, as suggested earlier. If you wanted to stay coastal, you could also ride the Santa Monica Mountains (Mulholland, Latigo Canyon et al), drop down to PCH through Santa Monica. This drops you onto 10 east, and its a short hop to 405 south for the run down to the El Toro Y (where 5 and 405 rejoin). 74 is a short hop beyond the Y if you still want to hit Ortega and Palomar (both highly recommended roads, just watch out for CHP presence on Ortega).
