Here are the details of my Fun Bike Center - San diego, CA interaction and concerns over how they dealt with the PDP.
Last October started with email to FBC about PDP for FJR
Got call - they don't have any FJR's and don't know what I'm talking about
(Strange premonition #1)
I explained the PDP and that I wanted to negotiate a price and give them a deposit.
No call back -
November I visited the dealership and spoke with Robert (don't know last name) about PDP and how I wanted to negotiate a price and put down a deposit.
He told me to come back in December. I tried to explain that orders were being taken and that I wanted to be on the front end of the list - not the back. he explained that they were a big SoCal dealer and that they would get bikes early - not to worry.
(Bad Premonition #2)
December - I visited Robert again - went through the same spiel. This time I was told that they had ALREADY ordered 8 or so bikes (this number would change between 8 and 15 depending on what day I talked to him) in the names of their sales staff - don't worry about it - you are first on the list. I explained that I wanted to ensure my name on that list and put $500 down - but that we should negotiate a price. He said - not to worry. They were the biggest dealer and we would give you an AWESOME deal
(Bad premonitions 3 & 4) - we even discussed my trade in at this time and he said that I should just look it up online and they would get close to trade-in book value.
(bad premonition #5)
Countless calls in January and February - Robert promised to call me back with news and status - but never did until march - always my same request - alwasy a same answer
(bad premonitions ## 6 through ??)
march 31 - Robert calls and says - hey - your bike will be in the next week. How do you want to pay for it? I tell him that I wont pay for something that we haven't yet negotiated, but I would be happy to come down and talk. Said to wait until bike showed up the following week. Iasked him if this was an April fools joke -
Called on Monday April 3 - Robert was off, but guy who answer doesn't know about any FJR's coming in.
Called on Tuesday April 4th - Robert says - no bike- but probably... won't promise anything but possibly next wednesd 4/12 it would be in (perhaps sooner, but not promising anything).
April 11th call (know he is off on Monday) - has no idea when an FJR will be in - doesn't remember telling me this Wednesday. Puts me on phone with Sales Manager Joseph Stevenson - who tells me (at 11:15 AM) that he doesn't have any idea when a FJR is coming in, but will be talking to the Yamaha Rep on Thursday and should know then.
(Lost count of bad premonitions)
I read on list that El Cajon has a bike - call them and speak to Aaron. doesn't know about a bike - but will check. Calls me back and yes -- one is on the way should be here by end of the week.
20 minutes later FBC and Robert call and tell me -
"we have a brand new '06 sitting on the floor and we don't know what to do with it" [salesman humor]
Asks me when I could come down. I told him that I didn't ride my bike today, but I would leave early, be down so they could look at the trade - wants to know if I'll be writing a check or what? I tell him - we will negotiate first.
------
boring details - offers me the bike with full retail price - PLUS 2495 or 2595 in freight and set charges - doesn't discuss my trade at all. I ask where is the "Awesome Deal" and am told that this is the only FJR in SoCal and that everyone applies freight and set up and that it is a sought after bike and that this was the deal. He asks what I would like to see.
I told him that we weren't even close - that I was looking more toward $13,000 OTD price instead of his close to 18,000. (still haven't discusse trade).
Frankly - I was prepared to pay full retail - but not be gouged on the freight and set up. For that I expected a fair - good faith offer on my trade-in. If they want premium pricing, then I should get it too.
I have no dispute with them over trying to get the most out of the bike. They knew that I was a motivated buyer and probably saw a sucker coming. They probably didn't think that I would walk away from the deal.
My complaint is this - that because they did NOT allow me to negotiate - and offered me assurances that they would bargain in good faith when the time came and the same assurances for my trade - that they removed my ability to bargain elsewhere.
they did ask me and discussed my offer of !0,500 to 11,000 All in my trade and whatever. This would have been a fair RETAIL (don't tell me how much you paid) offer on the bike - with them making money and me not getting totally murdered. They discussed it for about a minute and came back telling me that it was the only FJR in SOCal and there answer was NO.
I fully admit - that somewhere in premonition # 2 to 4 I should have walked away if not RAN away. That is MY FAULT. However, I did expect some integrity from them.
So - here is my recommendation -
STAY AWAY FROM FUN BIKE CENTER - if you must deal with them - GET IT IN WRITING _ in TRIPLICATE - have it notarized:

My phone call to them yesterday and speaking with Erin produced no warm glow in my heart.
Basically they said - you have a price dispute with a private vendor. Not Yamaha's problem. they did not want to here about the bait & switch negotiating tactics, nor that the dealer was abusing the PDP by ordering bikes in sales staff names.
