San Disk Standard vs San Disk Ultra

Looking forward to the day I order my Zumo 550. Apparently, for mp3/foto storage a SanDisk is needed. Never seen one of 'dem before.. Amazon has two different types, Standard and Ultra. The Std goes up to 4gB the Ulra only 2gB. The Std is substantially cheaper. Here is the site I was looking at.

Anyone know what the real difference is? The only obvious one I see deals around security. Perhaps the Ultra has some kind of password required to access the data? If that's all, then why would't it be wise to simply buy the cheaper unit that has more storage?

IIRC the Ultra has a faster read/write speed.

The San Disk Ultra is much faster at storing data (writing) and also faster at reading than the standard SD card. If you are a ~~pornographer~~ err, photographer with a high end camera the Ultra is the only way to go. I don't know that you would need the 66x write speed of the Ultra card for a Zumo.

The Zumo does not support the HD card yet. It will not work with the Zumo. It "might " be in the works for Garmin to have some software changes in the works to make this card work in the future, but as of today it NFG for the Zumo.

This is just my two cents. Working with Photography, computers and the Zumo.

To make it simple. Dont waste your money on the ultra.

To make it complex.

The card speed is measured on a computer. It is based on the read/write speed of the memory. It does read/write faster in that environment. However there is a large amount of debate as to whether it will actually read write that speed in the device.

Basically the card maybe faster but your device may not. I have used both types in my camera. Sony DSCF828 and I dont notice a difference. Its like putting jet fuel in your FJR. Just becaue it makes jets go fast doesnt necissarly mean it will do the same for your FJR.

Now on the Zumo. Most of the speed issue is relative to the Zumo not the memory card. When just doing one task it works great however when doing multiple tasks it will sometimes act funny. IE playing music is great. Veiwing pictures is great. Navigation is great. Searching for a resteraunts is great. However when using navigation while listening to MP3 while seatching for a resteraunt can cause the music to jitter a little while it is searching for the reseteraunt. The only thing running off the card is the music. I dont think it is the card I think its the fact that your trying to do three tasks off one processor. They can only make it so powerful.

So i wouldnt wast the money on the high end card unless of course I would test it first. Use the Zumo as stated above with both cards and actually see if there is a difference.
