Hey TWN,

in a post last week you were singing the praises of the santa anna winds. Just curious, still have the same opinion? Seriously, hope everyone is safe and well in SOCAL.

Just got off the phone with my wife, who was just boarding a plane in San Diego, heading home after spending the weekend in San Marcos. I-15 was closed, I-5 southbound was a parking lot. The friends she was visiting have already had other members of their family forced out of their homes. Close to a 1/4 million folks already evacuated. Not good, and no end in sight for the windy conditions.

Let's hope all the SPANK riders already left town.

Pffffft! Hardly. The Santa Ana's can be devastating with or without the fires mixed in. Besides, unless you missed it, Ari's post and all that followed were held to be in jest. <_<

That said, yes, I hope everyone remains safe as well.

I just emailed Pegscraper & Jacquie to see how they are and asked about elfireBob & Nanc. Scary stuff you guys are having in the Southland.

I was on the phone with Mom this morning, evidently trucks are having quite a mess because of the winds on Hwy 15 coming from the desert. Ain't much good news coming from SoCal the last day or so, and no improvement in sight for a couple more days.

Did I miss something??????

The weather in SoCal is not pretty right now. It's hotter than hot and the wind is unbelievable. I rode home, less than 10 miles yesterday and was never more thankful to see my own driveway. It was a thrill ride and then some, with massive gusts shaking the bike from all directions.

Andy taught an MSF class, and I went to watch/learn. As I rode home, it took 100% concentration and the use of all the skill, experience, judgment etc that I could muster. I thought later of the students who rode home from class. They have small, light bikes, not the best gear, and no experience.

Outside my house, there is a strong smell of smoke and a lot of debris flying around. Other than that, we're OK here.

A lot of familiar names on the news...Las Flores, Tuna Canyon, Piuma - even Topanga is getting a mention or two. Of course even the devestation in the Malibu area isn't close to what has happened today in San Diego County and up at Arrowhead. Truly terrible.

I heard from Pegscraper, the town 10 miles from them is being evacuated. Let's see, fires are reported as moving 3 mph....I don't think I like the math answer I'm getting.

They are safe for now but keeping an eye and an ear open. ElfireBob and Nance are on vacation...otherwise Bob, El Capitan de la Fieronistas, would be in the middle of it in San Diego.

All of this and the winds are supposed to be worse tomorrow. Holey Smokes! The most frightening quote I've heard is from the San Diego Fire Dept. spokesperson who said, "We have more houses on fire than we have people to fight them."

IRT the SPANK riders. As I left the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express at 11am Sunday morning there was only a couple of bikes left. I think everyone made it out before things got really hairy. The wind on my way home was the second worst that I've ever ridden in...made worse by the total lack of visibility near Perris, CA due to blowing sand. Traffic on I-215 was traveling at around 45mph w/ hazard lights flashin'. Scary cross winds. (The news reported gusts of up to 70mph). While I don't think I had anything like 70mph the crosswinds that I was in must have been above 40mph. Yuck. Add to that the blanket of sand that I was wearing, breathing, eating, and getting into my sapphire blue eyes and it really sucked. Sucked bad.

My GF didn't fair well on her trip from SPANK back to her place in Las Vegas either. I-215 got CLOSED due to high winds. She re-routed and eventually landed on I-15 as planned only to have it turn into a parking lot for one hour. Apparently a car caught fire in the center lane and she got to stand outside of her car for the duration of the delay....waiting....waiting. Before the car fire she called and said that she had already passed two or three (I don't recall) overturned tractor-trailer trucks. Yucky stuff for sure.

Aaaah, I forgot that one.

Then which one were you referring too?

I don't remember now, and I can't find it, memory is fading fast.
