We've had this fire burning in the back country that's been burning for over a month called the Zaca Fire. It's massive! The southern front has been contained mostly, and the lines are pushing to the north east, away from SB. Well, until yesterday. Unburnt 'islands' sparked yesterday and things looked scary for awhile.

Here's a shot from the office about 1 PM. This burst is prolly about 10 miles north of SB:

Last night, I found this time-lapsed vid showing 48 minutes of the eruption. I think this is called 'mushrooming' and one of a firefighters worst nightmares... watch how the cloud collapses - scary!

ooooooooh! spooky *isn't that from a song???*

You should move here to the land of trailers and tornado's

Hey, knock it off! Turn that fire off.

We're living in an orange tinted dreamscape up here in Bakersfield. At least most of the smoke is several thousand feet overhead. The afternoon on-shore breeze sends that stuff hundreds of miles up-state.

Wait until the Santa Anas start and the whole state is on fire!! Couple more whiskeys and I will do a rain dance or at least pee in the backyard. LOL.

Views southwest from Hwy 33. The crews are just sitting there, waiting for the fire to burn their way. This is but a mile or so of a twenty mile long + fire line in mostly unaccessible mountain and canyon country...

I have fought fires in that area before.... it's extremely rugged terrain. The firefighters have their hands full. They have a plan on the shelf that they may implement that will involve a backfire that will double the size of the already huge fire.

HERE is a site that has some information about most large fires in the US. In the top right corner, click on the name of the fire or the state you want. The name of this fire is "Zaca". Sometimes the site gets overloaded and won't open, so try again later.

They almost started the backfires Friday to protect SB, but the wind changed. They still have crews up on the ridge, ready to set them.

You know the fire is close when your day turns from bright sunshine to this.....
