Sargent Seat

Before I spend any more cash on a seat, if I could ask some questions of those of you who are using the Sargent seat made for the FJR. Not custom made, but out of the box.

1) Did Sargent resolve the issue of "slide" into the tank ?

2) Did you get the Griptex or Carbon FX ?

3) Do you have an ass that is "meaty" or "bony" (as I have)

4) Your weight please - kind of important I think

5) Are you happy with the seat ?

6) How does it compare to any "aftermarkets" you have previously owned. ?

I'm STILL looking for a seat that will fit

. Have not tried Russell yet, mainly cause I'm cheap :lol: , but so far have spent well in excess of a grand on seats, and still looking!

went from stock to Meyer (didn't work even after a re-do), then to corbin which was a little better after throwing a sheepskin on it. Now I'm back to stock with a sheepskin - 150 miles and hurting. Also tried all these with a Travelcade gel pad - still no good for the long haul.

I have a Sargent and have put about 2500 miles on it. Far better than stock but still not great. I do slide a bit towards the tank but not too bad. I am 6' 2", weigh 205, getting a bit bony ass, 61 yrs old. My wife really prefers this new seat w/back rest to the stock seat. I guess my vote is that it is a better seat, but a long ways from perfect.

I am 60, 6'3", 200 lbs and really like the carbon FX Sargent seat. I've never tried another custom seat so I can't give a good comparison but agree w/ BikerSkier...it's a great improvement vs stock but probably not the primo seat you're looking for. Suggest you talk w/ someone who has a Russell...that seems to be the seat of choice by most LD riders.

5) I think the seat is great, and beats the Corbin, but not a custom seat like a Russell

6) I only had the stocker, then got the Sargent

On the whole, I consider my Sargent some of the best $$$ spent on my bike. It is comfortable, looks great, and allows long ride days above all else. I also think that the firm nature of my seat has improved my riding.

I've had the Sargent seat since late last summer. I did an SS1K from NH to the EOM rally in Tennessee, some fairly aggressive riding while there (Dragon, etc), then a real hot all day trip over to Mirtle Beach, Then up to Richmond and 2 days on back roads back to Maine. I have been quite pleased with the seat in all respects. With baggy riding pants, I wished for more moving around room front to back. However, there is only so much room on an FJR so if I had more room, the passenger would have less, so I guess its a pretty good compromise. I have the carbon FX seat. The only time I crowd the tank is when I get pushed forward by the passenger under hard breaking. The seat stays consistent, not crushing down after a while. I sit more in the seat rather than on it. The same holds true for the passenger and she is much more comfy and secure for much longer.

I'm 5'8", 180-190 lbs (depending on season) and she would say my butt is meaty.

She is 5'4" and about 130 lbs.

I went from the stock directly to the Sargent. One main reason was for the backrest. I don't use it much now since putting on a Givi V46. I appreciate the extra storage inside the seat frame.

You don't indicate your location. Probably someone in your area with a Sargent would let you try it. I would, I'm in Central Maine.

I wore bicycle shorts under everything on the SS1K trip and I think they helped alot after many hours.

Comfort on a bike is all relative. Someone on this forum once said that you would be squirming around after 6 hours in a Lazyboy.

Here's my take, but beware, I am a Sargent dealer, but I will do my best to be objective.

1) I did slide a little at first when wearing my Aerostitch pants, but no longer.

2) I got the Carbon FX because, believe it or not, Sargent says in is the "grippier" of the two.

3) I'm overweight, but my as is not so fat....not that I would call it bony, but ?

4) 202 nekid

5) At first, I thought it was a slight improvement. Having said that, I just last night, got back from 9 days straight in the saddle, 2700 miles total. Never ONCE did I have any seat issues. I was impressed.

6) Never owned another aftermarket seat.

Hey Roger? Did you have Rick or Bill do your seat? Seems to me most everyone who gets Rick's, sends it back, but I never hear of Bill's going back except for MCML's. Maybe you should try brother Bill? He's here in Ojai. Let me know if I can be of help if the Sargent route doesn't pan out.

Oh and Jeff? #4 is just TMI! :lol:

I would just say that the Sargent is $600. It is in no way "cheaper" than one of the customs.

I had the Sargent, sold it to one of the forum members and now have a Meyers.

My biggest gripe is that the Sargent cut into my legs. The Meyers still pushes me into the tank which I asked for it to be angled back but it seems the same angle as stock.

If I sit just perfectly in the Meyers it is very comfortable other than sliding into the tank. I can send it back for adjustment but might wait until this winter if I do it at all.

If you are in the CA area, I would say get the Custom Russell if you like the looks as money for all 3 are in the same ball park...

You make good points. Yours a Rick or Bill? Seems like our problems were the same, except I had seat edge concerns also - digging into my inner thighs and cutting blood flow even after the re-do.

Bill 'Rocky' Mayer does indeed still make 'em. I have one. Difference is, you don't need to send Bill's saddles back! I had him eliminate the forward slope and I sit fairly well aft of the tank...

I've offered this before and the offer still goes: Since Bill is 20 miles from me and you want his saddle, fly in, bring your saddle and I'll meet you there with my bike for fitting. I'd even be happy to swap your risers in...

That is a great offer, one I will definitely keep in mind.

I have put about 4,000 miles on my sargent seat. I have the carbon fx. I like it but have had no others to compare to. I did have a problem were it would put presure on my thighs just below butt. I was in florida this spring and went to sargent were they removed a little padding and now I dont have that problem.

I will be in CA the first week of june for the Cal 24 which is a little north of sacremento. if you would like to check it out.

Had the carbon fx, excellent build quality, very nice looking, but for anything over 150 miles for us,

was not at all comfortable, sold it and got a russell , did over 500 in a day and the seat was never

an issue....it was worth every penny...

I have the stock Sargent seat in Griptex. I'm 5' 7" and 180 lb. I do slide toward the tank more than on the stock seat.

The Sargent seat has great quality of materials and fit and finish. I think it looks great, but it just doesn't work great for me. When I slide back far enough to get on the wide part of the seat, I am too far away from the bars (I have risers that mover the bars back 3/4"). The seat works better for me than the stock seat, but it still isn't what I need. I am not knocking Sargent seats in general. It is a high quality product, but no one design can fit everyone. I'm thinking of having a Russell seat done and then selling the Sargent.

It would be great if you could ride one before you bought it.

Roger is in Sacramento, Jeff is in Napa, so maybe we should do a little ride into that area (One could mention that the Rogdebs have been conspicuously absent from the NorCal rides, but one won't! ) and try "his" before you buy one from him. I've got 14,000 miles on my Sargent seat.....just put 2300 miles on it this past week. I have never once had any sort of seat-generated discomfort. I'm 5'9'' and weigh 200 lbs. This is a great, high quality product. But, as has been observed by others, no one seat will be right for everybody. I am extremely happy with my seat.
