Does anyone know about someone from Ironbutt doing a talk tomorrow (3/4) at a dealer somewhere in NJ or PA? I got a message to that effect and can't decifer the details!!

What type of message? If an e-mail, maybe copy and paste the details and we might be able to decipher that.

I believe that might be Jim Owen doing a discussion, but I'm not 100% sure.

Jim is a future 2006 FJR owner. He is a previous Utah 1088 winner, and had a podium finish going in each of the last TWO Iron Butt Rallies until his BMW R-bike shit the bed on him on the last Leg of BOTH events. (hence the new FJR! )

It was a garbled phone message and YES, it's Jim Owen. Really want to go but don't know where!

He lives in PA too, spends his days as a pilot, and is a helluva nice guy.

I got to rally with him in the Utah 1088 last year and is the model of rally efficiency.

I've sent him an e-mail asking what the deal is. I copied yours to him Mogan if he wants to answer. If I hear back I'll post details.

Well, I take that back because it's even easier. He's a member on this forum!

Clicky here and you'll see his user account. Shoot him an e-mail yourself.

Jim Owen is definitely giving a GPS/ Mapping seminar tomorrow.

Here is a pasted copy from another list.

Howdy All !!!

Were any of you going to be in the Allentown, PA area around March 4th at

9:30 am, you would be able to observe a presentation on GPS usage in the LD

Riding environment, and an introduction/discussion to the types of rides

sanctioned through the Iron Butt Association, both competitive and

non-competitive, from the Saddle Sore 1000 to the Iron Butt Rally. The

owner, John Feiertag, is planning on having some food and drink available.

Here is the address and contact information.

Tri-City Powersports

2450 Schoenersville Rd

Allentown, PA 18109

email address: [email protected]

If you're going to stop by, let John and myself know so we can plan

accordingly.

Tri-City Powersports is the Lehigh Valley's newest Yamaha dealer.

I do business there, no other affiliation.

Hope to see you there!!

Jim did an outstanding job. His lecture had two parts one about Iron Butt and long distance riding generally and a second about GPS nav for the former.

He seems so damn good at it that I think the best plan is to be his wingman and let him navigate. I tried to enlist him in hitting Reno for our big get together, but it sounds like he's already overbooked with Iron Butt commitments, etc.

Great guy. My only disappointment was that of the 25 or so people that showed up ONLY THREE ARRIVED ON TWO WHEELS. Bunch of whimps.

As a newbie on the Utah 1088 I found it reassuring to pass or be passed by him.

And to have him pull up along side you at a bonus was more reassuring than having Shaggy toss you a Scooby Snack.

You just have to get used to him arriving 15 seconds after you do to a bonus and leaving 15 seconds before you do....or just watching him ride past because he's memorized the criticial details and writes it down later.

Does anyone know if this is something he does often or was it a 1-shot deal?
Send him a PM or e-mail and ask him. He's mortal and a helluva nice guy the last time I checked. See above for a link to his his profile.

Does anyone know if there are any resources on the web about how to make the most of your GPS during a long distance event?
