Ok, so, yes I am planning a 'bike' trip. However, it is by a human powered conveyance, a la the lowly bicycle. I like to do long, self supported, solo bicycle trips. I am planning this years adventure (Wa to MT) and the side kick (me wifey) always gets a little worried when I am on the road. I am not one to take risks and I always have my cell phone as well as my Spot Tracker. However, cell does not work everywhere and the Spot Tracker (used for M/C riding too) is a bit limited in terms of my keeping in communication with her (yes, she can follow my progress on line). So, I was wondering about a satellite phone. Does anyone have any recommendations on these devices? I would want it to be light weight, on the less expensive side and... oh yah, it must work at any point in time on my route. Also- I noticed Verizon rents Sat phones... wonder if this is a good way to go?

Years ago, you lost cell phone signal 30 minutes outside any major city.

Not nearly so bad today, but....

If you find yourself in dire circumstances beyond cell phone reception

a satellite phone may not be much help as your likely beyond

help being able to arrive in a reasonable time.

A clear head and survival skills ( i.e. mechanical ability, first-aid training, etc, )

would be preferred where help could be an hour or more away.

As far as keeping in touch, I just grab some free wifi when available.

It's often more prevalent than cell service.
