I know that most of the FJR community prefers beer and the American and Canadian whiskeys to Scotch whisky. But there are a few folks in the crowd who enjoy single malts. I met a couple of you in Nakusp but have forgoten your names/handles and I have seen a couple of references here (Jeff, Mike). Since they probably won't print this information on our name tags, if we have name tags, I thought I would start a thread where the single malt crowd could identify themselves. I, for one, have allocated my 40 border-crossing allowance to seven different samples to share with fellow Peatheads (actually, less than half of the samples are of the Islay sort, the rest are unpeated).

Thanks for the tip, Kamal.

Richard, I will be using 5 ounce disposable (but reusable) flasks and a 10 ounce Nalgene liquor flask.

Won't be attending NAFO ( :( ), but those prices are awful! What kind of quantities can you legally bring into Canada? Just for example, that 16-y.o. Lagavulin (at $129, I think) can be had at California Costco stores right now for $51--a temporary special. The $89 12-y.o. Macallan is $41 here. I'd bring in all I could legally, share it around, and then stop drinking. ;)

I'll not be there this time either, but if you're a bourbon drinker, you better plan on bringing that along too. Those silly Canucks think you can make good whiskey with Rye, fer cryin out loud.

if you're out of beer, wine, whiskey, and water, I'll drink Scotch /maybe, but then I'm not going to NAFO

and Yanks think it's OK to make booze with corn. You can't even make good fuel for a car with corn. What makes you think you can make a decent bottle of booze with it??

No less than a member of the 1952 US Olympic Drinking Team, BeemerDons will tell you real drinkers drink Tequila shooters, no lime, no salt, just tequila. That's hardcore baby!!!!

I'll not argue the hard-cored-nes of BeemerDons, nor the efficacy of Tequila, But I know that you are far smarter than what you let on, Billy.

You can't make Bourbon (the nectar of the Gods) without corn. It's the law.

And for those (like us) that were lucky enough to be on the Buffalo Trace tour last fall at EOM, you might be interested in this little factlet: Note the best North American Whiskey voted for 2012 here: Click and be enlightened

I don't like scotch, but if someone else is buying it, I'll drink it. :D

No argument with anyone who doesn't enjoy Scotch whisky. More for us.

And I'll share with anyone. Who actually enjoys it, that is. <_<

Having just visited Scotland a year ago I made up my mind that I prefer Speyside. Too much peat in the Islay for me. I really didn't like scotch until I sampled some from the source last year. I'll sample from the other half.

if you're out of beer, wine, whiskey, tequila, mezcal, vodka, schnapps, grappa, poteen, pulque, ouzo, sake and water Sterno filtered through a dirty gym sock, I'll drink Scotch /maybe, but then I'm not going to NAFO (or at least I will fake you out and then ride West to steal your liquor!).
Fixed.

Intech, that's what almost everyone says......at first.....for a while.....but sooner or later they come over to the dark side!

Speaking of which, Brad, looking forward to sampling a bit of the Laphroaig cask strength. No Ardbeg for me this trip but I have packed:

Caol Ila 12 Alchemist Peaty but finished in Sauterne casks so it is sweet, too

Oban 14 Just plain good whisky

Talisker 10 007's drink of choice in the novels (not the shaken martini nonsense from the movies). The only scotch whisky from Skye

McCarthy's Orgeon distilled using Islay peated barley, smokey, great stuff

Bruichladdich 10 The Laddie The first release made start to finish by the new owners. Very mildly peaty, easy to sip

Glemorangie Artien A blend of 15 and 21 year old stocks, finished in Sasacaia wine casks

Ten oz each of the Laddie 10 and the Talisker, 5 oz of each of the others, Mr. Customs Agent, sir/ma'am.......

......that is if it makes it all the up there
Might have to add something else for the trip up on this side of the border. And I will certainly need substantial help with consuming the stash in Castlegar 'cause I have no plans to re-cross the border with any leftovers.

Convert me! Glenmorangie and Laphroaig I am already good with.

Hmmmm, Robert, where to start? First time I shared a glass of peated scotch with Valerie, my girfriend, I ordered the Lagavulin 16 and she ordered a glass of a Macallan something or other. I offered her a sip. . . . and she practically spewed it out. Now, roughly 2 1/2 years later, she was recently heard to comment that she does not think that they make a scotch that is peaty enough for her tastes.....and she has sampled any number of Islays including the Ardbeg Super Nova.

I will make sure to save a shot of the McCarthy's for you and, I think, the Caol Ila, too!

Joseph, if you want to bring more supplys you can transfer them to my bike when you stop with Mike. I don't drink so it would be safe. :)

If anyone can bring a bottle of Evan Williams bourbon, I'd be in your debt. Can't find this in WA.
