Thicker soled boots are a good way. However that means no matter when you ride, where, in what weather, you need THOSE boots. Lowering links and custom seats, last longer, and allow more variety of footwear to be used.
My two cents.

PS - 30" inseam here, and I recently bought a custom seat which works great. And coupling that with slightly thicker boots DEFINITELY help. But a couple hundred (or couple thousand) miles of riding and you'll be able to ride this in any shoes and feel perfectly safe at slow speeds. All you need to do is reach part of ONE foot the the ground when stopped. If you can do that, you can ride it.
