Looks like i'm going to grab a week next month and run down to Motoport to have Wayne measure me for a suit. I'll be taking a week off, so I'm planning routes now.

Timing on when I am at the shop is flexible right now, but I'll lock an appointment as soon as I choose a route.

  • I know I can slab down the 5 - easy peasy and boring, but obviously the most time-friendly.
  • I could hit the coast, but even 9 days at this time year could see me dealing with slow a$$ed traffic on PCH 1 etc. I've kind of given up on the coast of Oregon for time reasons - I have two, maybe three stops to make in SoCal (LA, Escondido and San Diego).
  • I could head towards Utah and run through Nevada - but is this just a blast furnace this time of year?
In my mind, the trip really begins as I enter California. For extending my timing in CA, I'm eyeballing a slab run to the Medford area, then branching out to funner secondary roads form there down.

Looking for ideas on where to ride that doesn't add 3+ days to the calendar - extra hours, no problem. Even an extra day, no problem. 2 extra days might be pushing it. 3 is too many...maybe.

Bottom line is I have 7/8 days to play with - so what say you, denizens of the road?

Just rode back from Temecula. The best kept secret in the state of California is Highway 395. You will see very little traffic, some great mountain passes, very good roads and lots of interesting small towns. Check it out!!!

+1 on Hwy395. I'd much rather take it northbound from the Los Angeles area than I-5 up through the Central Valley and all the traffic. 395 is more interesting and I think usually has lower temperatures. Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washington get pretty toasty during the summer but nothing compared what I-5 has. From Sacramento it doesn't take long heading east on I-80 to get to the 395; traffic can be heavy especially around the Air Races week but you don't have to deal with it for long.

+1 on this route.

Also recommend the following:

Day 1. Make time and get through WA quickly, you've already ridden these roads. Maybe deviate from I5 at Eugene, and take the 58 to the 97, then head west at the 138 to Crater Lake, take some pix, and then head into Medford via the 62. PNW Crew did this as an easy first day ride to Medford.

Day 2. Take Bugnatr's route. Then land somewhere near the Bay Area.

Day 3. Since you want to do the coast, my favorite section begins at Salinas, go the back way to Monterey (via the 68), and stay on 1 to Santa Maria. Stop and take the pics you dreamed of. End in Santa Maria.

Day 4. At Santa Maria, take 166 to Hwy 33 to Ventura. That will also set you up be to near Mulholland and related canyons. Either ride those or jump to day 5.

Day 5. Gotta do Angeles Crest, Hwy 2, from La Canada/Flintridge all the way out to the 15. You can also consider 138-18-38 for a long all day route of twisties.

Days 6-7. Visit Motoport, get fitted, leave early. Have lunch at the hole in the wall mexican place on Yelp that serves the best Pozole. Visit the roads around Julian (stop for pie), including the 76 and 79. Take I8 east to Hwy 84, then come back towards San Diego but make a quick stop on the US side of Tecate, just because. Stay on 94 and work your way back towards San Diego.

Days 8-10 Figure out a route back home, preferably hit the 395. If you can, get your ass to Oroville at the start of Hwy 70 and take it all the way through Lassen, all the way to Susanville. Spend some time in the Fossil area of Oregon if possible. Maybe stop and say hi to FJRay in La Pine.

Awesome Awesome roads around there. Doesnt get much better

Awesome gang! Thank you. :) Gotta do some mapping today and see how this all fits. Might add an extra day to fit some more in. :)

OK, here's what I've put together. I've read the recommendatiosn here, looked at maps, calculate ride times and balanced it against my overall plans and stops. The route is different than my original concept simply because Highway 395 caught my attention after the recommendations, so I'm running this gig cloclwise now, as oppsed to my original counter-clockwise plan.

Please don't be offended if your recommendation didn't make the cut.

Some basics about the trip:

  • stopping for visits in Sand Diego, Escondido and Thousand Oaks - that's primarily what the trip is built around
  • I'm balancing freeway/highway with more scenic routes. Unlike many, it seems, I have no issues with freeway riding - obviously it much more enjoyable when done in areas I haven't traveled before, but new-to-me- is new to me, so I don't mind some freeways during the trip - plus, they remain a great way of coverig ground in shorter periods of time in some cases.
  • It appears that much of my coastal travel will take place during the week, which I hope helps with traffic a bit.
  • My route planning used online maps with real-time traffic data - I prepped this route on a Sunday evening at about 5:30 - 8:00. In most areas, the difference with traffic was moot, but around the LA and SFO areas, obviously it added time. BUT, since my locations for nightly stops were planned base don the longer drive times between cities, I have less miles in those instances, and if I'm lucky (or crazy enough to try lane splitting on the Elephant (Super Tenere with panniers) I may actually arrive a bit earlier than my plans forecast. This planning also means all times-to-locations are based on posted speed limits - if i'm a bit faster, arrival times are earlier, or I may extend to another location "down the road".
  • Built in one rest day, though may build in another - I'm flexible on this.
  • *Thinking* of camping in Joshua Tree National Park one night, but the alternate here is a ride-through, maybe cook dinner there, then hit Palm Springs for a soft bed and warm shower.
  • Based on roughly 8 hour riding days - my plan is ride for a few hours, rest a bit/eat/etc., ride a few more hours, rest/eat/etc., ride to desination for the night. Bike is set up for this, I need some prepping (stretching daily now, hydrating more, eating better). Plan to use all available daylight for riding - able to extend if needed/able.
OK, enough of my caveats. Here's the planned route. A gigantic tear drop encompassing Oregon and California!

Day 1 (Sat - August 8):

Redmond east on 90 to Toppenish

South on 97 through Bend to Klamath Falls

Day 2 (Sun - August 9):

Klamath Falls east on 140
South on 395 at Lakeview
Past Sparks/Reno
Pick up 395 again to Mammoth Lakes

Day 3 (Mon - August 10):

Mammoth Lakes south on 395 to Kramer Junction
Take 58 east to Barstow
Either end in Palm Springs or camp in Joshua Tree Nat'l Park

Day 4 (Tues- August 11):

East on the I10 to Indio, then South on the 86 passed the Salton Sea
West at El Centro on the I8
Stop in San Diego at Scooterwest
Stop in Escondido for Motoport measurements
I15 North past Corona to the 210
West on 210 to 101, continuing to Thousand Oaks

Rest Day (Wed - August 12)

Day 6 (Thur- August 13):

101 North from Thousand Oaks to San Luis Obispo
Take Hwy 1 North along coast to Santa Cruz
Take 17 to Los Gatos, then what looks like the 280 over the Golden Gate bridge to Santa Rosa (Map is busy at this spot, so I'll double check the actual route online)
(Alternate: Hwy 1 all the way to the Bridge)

Day 7 (Fri - August 14):

101 north to Cresent City - Avenue of the Giants detour

Day 8 (Sat - August 15):

Crescent City to Lincoln City on the 101
East on 18 to McMinnville - air museum
(may bail here, grab the I-5 and blast home - depending on how I feel a week-ish into this adventure - air museum is a repeat for me)

Day 9 (Sun - August 16):

Various options roughly all leading to the I 5 and home

The two biggest issues, traffic wise are obviously LA and San Fran, htough both are somewhat managable during the week during non-peak hours, inmy experience. Still heavy traffic, but moving.

Next biggest hurdle is vacation traffic along the coast - won't know what that looks like unless I go there...

So, reasonable route? Enough time? Any glaring issues I'm missing here?

From Santa Cruz, skip 17 and take Hwy 9 to Skyline/35 to 92 and then to 280. Traffic will depend on what time of day you get to SF/Santa Rosa... I'd say between 10am-2pm would be your best bet to get through there without too much traffic on a weekday.

If you do opt for 17, from Hwy 1 take the Porter St/Bay Ave exit, turn RT and keep going straight - road turns into Soquel San Jose Rd. LT onto Summit. RT Old Santa Cruz Hwy which will dump you right back onto 17.

You do know how hot it is down 395 below Bishop, Joshua Tree etc., right?
Yeah - averages are around 100 degrees.

Thus my mesh jacket, evaporative cooling vest and neck wraps. I've used these on longer rides before in 100 degree heat with good results. Couple this with the 1.5 gallon Camelbak and 1 gallon rotopax of water on the bike, plus some extra water in the tank bag and panniers, and I should be able to hydrate and remain coolish while inland for a couple days. If not, I can ride during the shoulder hours and I have an extra couple days vacation booked in case my pace falls off and I need to extend.

Duane Dude, you are riding the Vespa to Cali aren't you! JSNS, Vespas Rock ese!
Alas, I'm wussing out here Don and taking the Super Tenere. I did try to mount the Happy Trail panniers from the Tenere on the Vespa, and while they fit, they're ugly as a$$. And with style points counting double these days, you know, I gotta go with the Tenere. :)

Get yourself on the road about 0430 and in the air conditioned motel around 1500, ride some local roads after dinner for a while. Summertime tactics.
