I am installing a bash plate, highway bar and Nerf bars on my KLR today. I put on the bash plate with nothing but a xerox (500th copy) picture for directions. Not too mechanically inclined but going to get through it, and learning bit by bit. Got through some issues and then started second guessing something. I U bolt goes around the downtube, then and aluminum spacer then the bash plate, then on the outside of the bashplate washers and finally nuts. Blue thread locker and locknut's used. Did I put the washers correctly on the outside of the bash plate, or should they have been between the spacer and the bashplate; with just the nuts showing on the outside? I did the same with the bottom bolts and nuts -- washers between the nut and bashplate. I need to know so I can go on to install the nerf bars... thanks in advance to those more mechanically inclined. Some humor allowed in the responses as well.... :p

Here is a pic of the completed install:

That looks good to me.(although you're making an already heavy bike even heavier.... )
I know, but a broken case really ruins your day. The bike ain't meant for speed... but point taken. If I ever really get into off road riding I have an excuse to get another bike... oh honey? It would be safer to get a DLR....

Thanks for helping.

Technically IMHO, YMMV, the washers should always be on the nut side at a minimum. If you can also put them on the bolt head side that's fine too. The lock washers should always be on the nut side. So the order is; bolt, washer (optional), another washer on other side, lock washer, nut.

Looks good to me per the pix. You should be good to go. Check the bolts every so often make sure they are still there, although I'm sure you knew that.... :D

1.) Stop thinking....

2.) Go ride it..... :yahoo:

3.) If something falls off, go back and pick it up. :dribble:

:D

:bleh:

You're doing fine, Michael. Enjoy all of the new toys.

Mrs. Shiny and I really need to talk...
Ni FOOKIN way! :russian_roulette:

Can't we all just be friends here? :friends:
Yeah, Barb....what he said!

As others have said, the washers go directly under the nuts or against the bolt head. Their purpose is to spread the load of the relatively small diameter nut or head to the flat surface beneath. In this case, since this is a single U-bolt, there are no bolt heads to contend with, so where you put them is the only logical place to have them. U dun gud!

I've never met a women who didn't know what was going on when I would mention the need for a new toy, tool or gun. I've always gotten anxious when they are too eager to see me with a new toy, tool or gun. It usually means a quid pro quo is soon to follow.

All I'm saying is that if Barb and Mrs. shiny want to compare notes, I doubt either of them will learn anything they didn't already know.

Most times they just playin' dumb.

Aint that right Miz Bust?

To quote my 17 y/o daughter....

"Well, DUH"

Just havin' some fun with SPU ;) , he likes it

One simple fricken question ....
That thing looks like it's on upside down. Did you throw away the instructions?

:D
Let me at him!! Let me go I say!!! :ranting2: ;)

Along with a fuzzy 4" x 4" picture of the U clamp on a downtube, a parts list and the pertinent points (or impertinent):

"Remove any factory skidplates, crash bars and case guards.

Install all of the clamps loosely, then adjust the plate for the best fit then tighten all of the clamps. The allen socket in the bolts is metric, be sure to use a 5 mm allen wrench."

They obviously did not know who they were instructing in the fine art of installation.

Say Shiny, those look like Nylock nuts. If they are, and you really did use blue loctite......... you're gonna die a flaming death when the loctite eats the nylon and the nuts fall off. :dribble:

Ok, probably not. I don't think loctite eats nylon like it does ABS. However, if they are nylocks, the loctite was not needed or necessarily desirable. ;)

They aren't the only ones I put locktite on either. Lots of those things on this bike. Think I should go to the hardware store? Sigh... I thought I was doing good.
