Wonju is about 100 miles to the east/southeast of Seoul. It is a provincial capital , as well as the headquarters of the Korean Army. It has abundant farmlands, and is surrounded by low to medium hills and mountains, including Mount Chiak.

We left Yongsan US Army Garrison at @ 7AM on Sunday morning. Stopped at the base gas station to top off, but found that they did not open until 0800 on Sundays. The first leg we went about 60 miles to Ichon, which is home to Korea’s Celedon ceramics industry (more info here; https://eng.ceramic.or.kr/ ). We stopped for a breather at the festival grounds, and had a look around.

Then it was on to our main destination, Wonju and environs. Wonju is a small city, with some great countryside surrounding it.

The Wonju area is also home to Mount Chiak. We went to the end of the road on the north side of the mountain. I think that the locals were trying to figure out what we were riding…

Of course we had to stop by a local market to pick up some fresh healthy stuff. Check out those melons;

And the outdoor donut shop (hard to see)

We then toured some more and found a burial location of a famous scholar. The information said that the king wanted to buddy up to him, but the scholar wanted no part of it, so when the king came to visit, he blew him off…

We then headed back to Seoul. Although the prediction was for high 70’s, it was in the mid 90’s during the last hour or so, coming in to the city. Also a lot of traffic, so the going was tough. At the end we hit a great Korean BBQ restaurant, and enjoyed some refreshment….but I only got the “after” picture but not the “before”….

On a side note, after a quick town trip today I hit the 1,000 mile mark.....!!

I was hoping for reports like this! Thanks for posting up! I had orders for Korea once, and they were cancelled for a two year gig at Lajes Field in the Azores. I've yet to be to the Far East.

Excellent! I spent 2 years there (74-76) and have heard things have really changed since the Olympics. I always thought it was unfare that "Little America" (Seoul-stationed servicemen) got "command sponsorship" while us 2nd D stepchildren didn't (Tong Du Chon/near the DMZ - no POV's, etc.). Sure would have been nice to be able to ride while I was over there. Loved the photos and hope to see more.

Great ride report and photos. I love reading about and experiencing a great ride that includes good food! The Korean BBQ looks really good! Gives me a hankering for some Kim Chi and Bulgoki!

Nice trip report... thanks for that. It's good to ride vicariously with you guys who are in countries I may never get to. :yahoo:

YUM!! Kimchi & Kehgogi! Need to make a run to the local asian market. Rumor has it that there's a source for Oi Kimchi somewhere in town, but i've not hooked up yet.

meat regulation is pretty strict. they can clean and prep keh (dog) but can't butcher it until the sale. it looks like little versions of a whole beef in the butcher's freezer. sale of it in eateries is also very clear as to what you're getting (no sneaky tricks). S. Korea isn't like Malasia or some places where you're served mystery meat.
