Am I just getting old or is the FJR1300 service manual the worst manual ever? I never before paid this much for a manual in my life and I never owned a manual that left me more confused than this piece of trash. I was a computer tech for 37 years and until the PC was released everything I did was by following schematics. These are so small that even with a magnifying glass, I haven't the foggiest idea what I'm looking at. :angry01:

Just for kicks I looked up headlight removal, thinking I would get step by step instructions. On page 3-13 in manual LIT-11616-FJ-02 the entire set of instructions are "REMOVE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY," for installation, reverse the procedure. That's not a hell of a lot of help for me. I have owned many manuals before that cost half of the price and were extremely helpful. Is this a joke of some kind, or did I just waste $60? The only real use I find for it is torque values. :angry02:

Generally a manual first explains what model letters and numbers mean. The front cover says FJR1300AS©/AS/S/SC. The following page has FJR1300S© and FJR1300AS© I'm guessing the first 140 pages are an addendum to the rest of the book, the first page of which says, FJR1300R, and FJR1300RC. Nowhere does it explain what any of these letters and numbers mean. Please tell me someone has played a dirty joke on me. Maybe I am just getting more crochety and dumber as I get older. :angry03: :angry03: :angry03:

It's a communist plot to undermine our capitolist system.

Yes, it does suck. Yes the first 140 pages are an addendum for the ABS. The model designations are just for ABS, ABS Cali version, etc.

It is good, however, for placing under your centerstand when you need that extra 1-1/2" of clearance to pull the rear tire or on those cold winter nights, if you roll it up real tight, it'll burn for hours...

I have the basic non ABS FJR manual in electronic format and find it quite useful, especially the parts drawings and the electronic schematics.

The advantage of the electronic version is you can zoom into the drawings very easily and can search for what you want. For the headlight assembly for example, it's 5 screw/bolts. To get there, you should probably do some or all of the the step(s) before that (Cowling removal, etc...)

I just installed my new shock, SS brake lines, fork springs and front & rear pads and I simply printed out the 7 or 8 pages dealing with that and had all the torque values, etc.

It's always nice to compare what the manual says to the other FJR resources like FJRTech/Info. What isn't clear in one source is often clarified in the other...

Now you want a POS manual, try the FJ manual series with its main manual (for the 84 model) and its 3-4 addendums covering model changes over the next 8 years....

OK, page 3-13 on headlight removal says "Remove headlight assembly" as step 1. If I assume I should do the stuff on previous pages first, let's see now, pages 12 and 11 would have me removing :moil: the cowling(I've already done that with no problem and now that I've seen their picture I'm confused) pages 10 and 9 tell me to take out the air filter. Duh, I can be stupid, :stunned: but I doubt that I need to remove the air filter to get at the headlights, however the FJR has been a new experience.

I think I'll buy what twowheelnut is selling and roll it up tight this winter for a fire log, :focus: if I can't get my money back.

It's really simple, you just start taking stuff off until there is nothing left to take off! :D

Head lamps off along with just about everything up front all done with the service manual and a little common sense.

Just take your time and it will come apart fine, i doubt there is a service manual that will tell you which bolt or nut to remove every step of the way.

Good luck ;)

It rates major suckage status, but it's pretty much all there is right now till Haynes and Clymers(yuck) get in gear. Better than nothing, though at the price one would expect more.

I called in at Haynes's HQ at Sparkford a couple of weeks ago as I was due to pick up my FJR. Unfortunatly they have no intention of producing a manual for the Feejer as they feel there would not be a big enough market. However I did visit their motor museum so it wasn't a completely wasted trip.

I can tell you up front that the service manual played no part at all in your removal of headlights.

OK I'm new to the FJR, so I will read the book and apply a little common sense. Here are the book instructions.

REMOVING THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY

Remove the parts in the order listed.

1. Headlight assembly

For installation, reverse the removal procedure.

Now in my way of thinking and using a little common sense, this is saying the headlight assembly comes off with nothing else removed.

Sorry, but I can't see $60 bucks worth there.

Fortunately, they are going to refund my money. I always try to be fair and above board in my dealings, but this time I will buy one of those black-market E-bay CD's. It certainly can't be any worse. That is unless you need that extra inch and a half under your centerstand as per twowheelnuts advice. And to the Yamaha publisher :p
