Looters on the Devon beach of Sidmouth could not believe their eyes when several seagoing containers

washed ashore from a wrecked cargo ship revealed dozens of brand-new BMW R1200RT motorbikes packed inside.

It appears that other boxes were also found that contained dozens of US-made motorbikes, which the looters

promptly pushed back into the ocean :clapping:

(based on a true story :p )

and, under salvage laws, they are legally entitled to keep what ever they find.....

the local news here, claimed that in one case, one of the bmw's was able to be started and ridden off the beach !

Mmmh...I doubt BMW will promptly make registration documents available to them  .

I guess they'll end up parting them out...

Actually, according to salvage laws updated in 1995, they are welcome to pick it up and protect property as long as they notify the Coast Guard that they have it (there is a form). If they try to own/hide it, it is a hefty fine and jail sentence to deal with, per item taken.

It ain't like the old days.

That said, if they protect it from the ravaging tides, they are due a finders fee from the property owner.

The guy in the photo is:

A) Calling a lawyer.

B) Asking BMW what oil to use.

C) Trying to locate Mikey and his world famous 4" grinder.

Windjammer,

I'm glad you picked up on that one... ..it being the only reason this post was under "Jokes".

The first part of the post was obviously a legit news-item.

US bikes (i.e.: HD's and Buells) do have a certain following here, but a lot of their riders are hopeless weekend posers, like bad-***-wannabe accountants and lawyers. :glare: We regular S-T folks take a dim view of them, while of course looking absolutely Fubar to their crowd...

A buddy of mine and his GF are in Italy for a couple of weeks. He said the first two bike he saw, that weren't scooters, were Harley's!

Yep, it's just the same here, only the numbers are different. The lengths to which some of the posers will go to look hardass is just amazing. I really laughed the first time I saw someone lay out $500 for a leather jacket that looked like someone dragged it behind a truck for 50 miles....

Sorta makes you wonder if the same folks would pay double for a motorcycle that sat in the ocean for a coupla weeks????? You know, so it looked like someone had actually used it.

Could it look any "badder" than this?

PS: Watch out: half-naked Ms MadMax back there is inflatable... :p

Interesting development on the container ship that dropped 58 containers into the English Channel last January. The local councilman from Sidmouth (Devon) who was very vocal on TV against looters is now being questioned by the local police. He's accused of having stolen one of the brand-new BMW R1200RTs that washed ashore. No doubt he locked it in his garage for safekeeping, then forgot all about it... :nono:

Here is the whole story
