Purchased a Shoei Black Joust RF-1000. I was hoping it would cut down on the wind noise I noticed from my old Fulmer. Not luck. The Shoei manual talks about adjusting the shield mounting brackets, but there appears to be not enough adjustment to get a good seal all the way around the shield. When I look at the gasket that is around the helmet opening. I can see non-contact right where the bend becomes more radical on the sides....this produces noise. Anyone having the same issue? Any suggestions besides ear plugs?

Similar problem here w/ my Shoei RF-1000. On a recent trip from TN to TX, it rained from Knoxville to Vicksburg. I noticed an occasional drip on my right eyebrow...shield is not sealing well. It hasn't been enough of a problem for me to worry with...

I can't say I've noticed this on my RF-1000, but a lot of times, I have to ride with the shield cracked open a bit because it's the worst fogger I've ever had. Could be because in cold weather I'm using the chin curtain to close it up a bit. I also switch faceshields between clear and tinted.

I have noticed that when the shield is open partially, the wind noise will make a very deep noise. First couple of times, I thought it was subwoofer in the car next to me, then I closed the lid and it got quiet again.

1+

it is a foggy thing, seems the de fog vent does not work as advertised, must keep it cracked even with breath fog guard installed.

But it is warm when all vents and shield are closed!

Mine fogs in Tampa at 60 degrees. The nose cover that came with the helmet makes the fogging worse.

RF-1000 here. FWIW Only get bad fogging at stopped position at low temps...otherwise fine. I do use earplugs for wind noise all the time. I ride with my stock feejer shield down 99.9% of the time.

The shield can absolutely be adjusted to prevent any wind entering through the shield, I've adjusted quite a few myself that were leaking. It can be adjusted with the stock windshield but for a rookie like me, was a PITA.

I called Shoei and asked the nice lady there to send me a shield designed only for adjusting. It has 2 holes on either side of the shield, allowing you access to both plastic adjustment screws with the shield in the full down position.

5 minutes later, presto!

Also if any of you go to the Shoei booth at the M/C show that rolls through town once a year, the person who mans the booth will gladly do it for you, while you wait. The person you will meet there is very knowledgeable about their entire product line. ;)

As far as the fogging problem goes, get a Pinloc shield and all your fogging problems will be history.

Skyway did adjust my RF1000 shield and it did help, but this is still a very noisy helmet, IMO. Shoei just came out with a new flip lid that the rep was hocking at the MC show. Looks like they spent a lot of time on wind-shaping the lid and the best news is that all shields will now fit all models! As for fogging, he was pushing the pin-lock system hard and several riders milling about all gave the thumbs up on that gizmo.

I too have the RF 1000, & it's quieter than the top of the line X eleven....I've tried them both back to back in the city & on the highway....the face shield adjustments can make a big difference....but you really should always wear earplugs when riding,.... for your long term hearing if nothing else.... just ask any doctor.... ....

I too have an RF-1000 and like it after years with and Arai (altough I liked that too). It isn't what I'd call quiet but not bad either. Aways wear ear plugs anyway. My issue is with the chin vent. It doesn't seem to do anything. I haven't tried all the venting combinations but opening it even in cool weather results in no air movement. I've only had it a month or so and only ridden with it a half a dozen times or so so far. Can't beat the comfort and fit though.

I looked at both of the RF's I have, and did not notice any apreciable gaps in the shield when closed. There is a chance your visor is warped or faulty. (this has happened to me with a KBC helmet I bought, they sent me a new shield and it fit correctly) Perhpaps you should try another visor and see if the problem is still there.

As far as noise, I'm not sure if the gap you see is what is causing the problem. Most of the noise inside a helmet is caused from air coming in underneath the helmet, and alot of noisey helmet reports are actualy due to a poorly fitting helmet, i.e. one that is a size too big. Your cheekpads should touch your cheeks and the helmet should be a fairly tight fit going on. Many folks think their fit is fine until they try on a helmet from a diffrent company. Head shapes are diffrent and helmet fit varies from maker to maker. Finding one that fits your particular head can be a challange.

My RF is one of the quietest helmets I have ever owned, and I have had alot of helmets over the years.

I have not noticed any fogging problems...the helmet does come with a breath guard, and if it is cold out I use it. The front vent does little unless you are moving quite fast and have your windscreen down...and get the right position in the flow of air coming off of it. The top vents do let in air on hot days at least.

To check if your shield has a leak, close the visor and take a piece of paper to the inside and see if it will slide past the rubber seal. If the seal is good, you will feel resistance. If the paper easily slips past the seal, that's where the leak is.

Just repeat around the entire perimeter of the shield. A leaky face shield adds a lot of wind noise and when riding during cold weather makes a huge difference on the temperature around your face.

Wow, this question sure did get a lot of action in a short time.

I bought my last RF1000 used off Ebay.(about the 15th I bid on)

With Hind Sight, I believe it was for sale because of this issue.

After some study, I discovered one of the big hinge mount screws was loose.

Applied some locktite and cranked it down.

Been solid and sealed ever since. :)

Interestingly, the screw design is a very course bolt thread on a very slick plastic surface.

Seems almost designed to come loose without locktite.

So seller and buyer both feel like they pulled one over on the other guy.

I like the RF-1000 so much, I bought a second after a solo low side.

Important to know that the cheek pads are layered inside, so they can be easily modified for a custom fit.

(assuming you know someone with little fingers)

Locktite on plastic? Bad things can happen because locktite eats plastic. The adjuster screws on mine come loose from time to time It isn't that big a deal to me and I just haven't found a cure for it yet.

For those having fogging problems, do you have the back vent open? I only have foging problems when stopped (so I open the face shield), once under way I can feeo the breeze up the front of the shield...but rear vent must be open to allow enough air to pass through. Just relying on the venting at the back of the helmet liner isn't enough for me.

Another thing to consider for the fogging problem is that you may be a heavy mouth breather and not even realise it. At the show last year, the lady at the Shoei booth proposed this to my BIL, which turned out to be his problem of major fogging in his RF1000. He has since added the pinloc shield and all is now well.
