Was riding home today in Ca. on I-5 south around Stockton. I slowed after seeing in the distance a leo shooting photos for speeding standing beside his car. Nothing on my radar detector. But he was unmistakably taking pictures of cars that were speeding, probably all of them. Lots of revenues today. What a deal. No more just hitting a guy with radar and stopping the vehicle. Take pictures of hundreds at a time. Just glad I was going the other direction. Can this be done? If so we could be in trouble with big brother.

Its called LIDAR. They stand (the car or bike at a 45 degree angle) and focus on your license plate. Uhm, its very accurate and the beam is so narrow that your radar detector normally won't pick up the signal unless he happens to "sweep" past the unit.

Yep, sounds like the CHPy was using LIDAR. The beam is an infrared light that will not be picked up by any RADAR detector. They work on different pricniples. btw....the light beam is only 3ft in diameter at 1000 ft.....chances are the CHPy will get you before you see him/her....always ride safe...

FWM, have to agree, LIDAR. CHP now are running this setup along with the RADAR they've used in the past. My Passport 8500 will pickup LIDAR but usually as MM2 said, only if the patrol unit is lighting up vehicles ahead. I usually get just a small blip or blips when the vehicles ahead are being targeted. Thats because the Passport unit can reach out to 5 miles on a clear streach such as I-5 as I'm sure the Valentine's will as well. And they are detecting RADAR and LASER in a "360" degree radius. So don't forget that when your unit alerts you.

If you are the targeted vehicle though, its too late and you've been had. Here's a website that might be of help in staying out of trouble. It is pretty accurate and up to date. Speed Traps The best defense though is to keep your speed managable and know where and when you can do the dance. PM. <>< ;)

Is it me or has CHP added a ton of ticket writing sneaky instant on lidar packing coppers.

Man they are everywhere. I feel like a bag of popcorn in the microwave with a the radiation they are putting out.

All the more reason I enjoy riding out of state.

Oh well it's for safety not revenue enhancement, eh?

The CHP is using this new tool quite effectively on I-80 between Sacramento and Fairfield. And they've learned "where" to park, usually just over a hump or rise...."Gotcha!"

Of course, I see them while in my work truck and I manage my speed much differently with that vehicle. I do find it wickedly entertaining when I 'm being seriously passed by another "big rig".

Or by a cage I estimate @ 80+ mph.

Do you know if there is a similar site for other states ... like NC?

TIA,

JW

They've been on Highway 12, too, between Rio Vista and Fairfield. Sneaky devils....
