I'm wondering what the average shop time should be to check valve clearance and replace a few exhaust valve shims is. They couldn't read the mechanics notes to let me know how many of the valves were tight and he wasn't there to clarify, just said "a few of the exhaust valves".

I was charged 13.7 hours to do the while doing the new TPS (under warrenty). I also had them check the swing arm bushings and steering head bearings, replace the antifreeze, front brake pads and clutch & brake fluid. Ian, Iowa

havent had mine done, but that sounds like a helluva lot of money, even with everything else, hope to here more responses

I just asked the service manager where I get my work done and he told me 3 hours just to check, 7 hours total if it's a check and correct.

Just picked mine up today for valve check service. All were fine and 4.5 hours. :)

Were you charged 13.7 for everything? or 13.7 for JUST the valve job? Either way you got screwed! I'm just trying to figure out how bad.

Ian - Sounds like it is in the ballpark; I had almost the exact same service last month and this is how it broke down:

3 hours - swingarm service

3 hours - steering bearing service

6 hours - valve check and one valve adjusted

1 hour - radiator flush and change coolant

13 hours total

I also had the TPS done but I didn't count that because I didn't pay for it.

Thanks Maddog. It seemed high to me but I didn"t know what the charges should be. I think everyone thinks the other guy is getting fat without any real idea of what it takes to open the front door every day in a business. Ian, Iowa

BTW, the 13+ hour charge was for everything. I could do most of the rest myself but the temp in my garage is about +10F. This was the first shop work I had done since I bought the bike with 2600 miles on it. Should last until either the bike &/or I are in the casket! Ian. Iowa

When you break it down like that it sounds a little more reasonable. Sounds like you just got a good fondling. :)

$1100.00 for a tune up on a FI engine? I am in the wrong business or not charging enough. That is way more than should be paid for service.

How much for the 600 mile? $1,000.00?

April, last year at 28,000 miles. The estimate for a valve check and adjust with coolant replacement was 3.0 shop hours plus parts and supplies. Work was done, but shop found the exhaust valve guides were worn. These and valves were replaced, head worked over and all work was covered by Yamaha.

This was at Wilson's in Fresno, CA.
