I wanted to share this picture of a nice sand blasted stripe up my cowling, which would not have happened had I installed my fenda extenda sooner. I didn't bother showing the extra dirt in the radiator as since the stripe goes all the way up the cowling, I figured you all would also see the radiator would get it too. Look and learn. Words weren't enough for me! That is not dirt on the cowling, that is where paint has been blasted off from tire kick up. Perhaps some 3M clear cover would be useful there too!

Just means that you are riding the thing. I'd be proud. War scars...so to speak....if I may be so bold as to say.

Does anyone have a good link for a site/shop that sells the 3M protector film referred to in this post. I recently rented a bike ('05 FJR) on my 4,000km New Zealand bike trip that had some sort of clear plastic film on many of the panels, including the pannier sides that did a great job of protecting the pain. I am very keen to get my hand on some of this stuff for my new '06 FJR (still waiting for delivery)

Here's one option: The Tankslapper Not perfect, but I have used it, and recommend it with a 7 out of 10.

Though those pieces may not fit everything on the 06 FJR. I would contact the company and ask about the 06.

Here's what I did 3 years ago, and still going fine. 3M Black Reflective adhesive (as used by some on the rear of their side cases) on the Chin Piece, and also along the leading edges of the fairing:

It protects the chin piece, and reflects at night when light hits it:

I have used the Tank Slapper system but have also found and alternative. My son works for a sign company and he suggested just using their clear vinyl to protect any surface area of concern. Tried it and it worked great. Basically the same 3M product as used in the Tank slapper kit but has adhesive back. VERY inexpensive. Just go to any sign company that makes banners and signs using vinyl. Buy some and install yourself or have them install it. Quick an easy fix for a problem. ;)

TestPilot, that is an exceptional idea !!!

+1!!

Hi O,Vale You may want to ask some of the Auto detailers in your area We have a few good ones that specialize in high end exotic autos that use this clearguard 3m type stuff The prep and install is key If its good enough for Richy Rich's Lotus or Lamborgini It's good enough for your almost as fast FJR!!

@TestPilot

Where did you get the 3M tape? I think that is the way to go. I may do a shot of Line-X on it. Has anyone done this yet?

And David didn't even mention the ultra cool carbon fiber extenda!!

@ Docdan.. he bought it in OZ I guess, he's way south of us ! :D

Just turned 12,000 miles on my FJR and the fairing and the radiator behind the front tire is nearly pristine. I am careful where I ride the beast, and have run into no road construction gravel which would change that. I have no F' extenda or any other protective on the beast. Suppose just lucky, so far.

I've ridden over dirt roads, cinder and sand laiden winter roads, and Nevada at night in the summer (more bugs than you thought existed in a locust swarm.) That my bike has paint is a good thing, I only have 14,197 miles. I have used my poor lonely FJR so little in the last two months of rain.

I have "Linex-type" material on the lower part of my sidecases. I have considered using it on the chin piece also. I DO have a FendaExtenda and still have a worn stripe on my bike's chin piece. Of course, I haven't done the serious travelling O'vale has, but still, when I detail the bike I see that there is a definite "battered area" there.

I think that should I ever have to repaint this bike, it'll be "metallic black" like my XS 1100. I want it to look as cool as David's bike!

A couple questions for you guys.... Testpilot, which sliders are those on your black fjr? Kaitsdad, are the chin pieces at the bottom of the bike near the radiator?

Thanks.

The black reflective vinyl is 3M bought by the metre from a specialist graphics/signage company. This is what the back looks like:

The sliders are from BikeJohnny (sponsors of the FJROwners site) - the R&G sliders: https://www.fjrowners.ws/ and click on the BikeJohnny link.

And yes, I have a few cool carbon fibre bits. A local business specialises in CF aftermarket parts for bikes, and they used my bike to make the mould for the CF fender extender and tank protection https://www.geelongcarboncraft.com.au/

Duh!!! Did no one read my post. You can get the 3M clear or any color you want at a sign shop. CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
