Good Day all!

Just was overlooking the owners manual on my 04 FJR and didn't notice how to remove hard bags? did I miss it somewhere.

Thanks

If you had taken delivery of the '04 FJR from your dealer they would have covered this at the time of delivery. It ain't rocket science ;)

1. put key in the bag lock and turn to unlock

2. lift the grab handle up

3. lift the bag straight up and off -- done

... and don't be overly concerned if the first time you try to remove the bag, the handle offers more resistance to raising than you feel is normal!

My 06 had not had the bags removed in quite a while when I bought it, and I thought I'd break the handle off in my hand the first time I went to remove the bags. Seems there is a build-up of "swarf" around the tang that holds the bag to the bike, and you must overcome that additional resistance the first time.

Clean the tang and pocket in the fairing into which it extends... Next time will be much less dramatic!

I received a separate manual with the owner's manual that outlined how to uninstall and install the bags. I still had a problem as don't think the bags had been removed in four years. :dribble:

While you're at it I'd check out the thread below. Did it on my 04 and 06. Easy to do and lot's of piece of mind.

"side bag safety farkle (toe cutter solution)"

I'd do a linky thing for you, but I haven't figured out how to do it yet.

Thanks for the Help, and when picked up from the dealer they had no idea how to remove the hard bags. By the sounds of it I'll just leave them on there as don't want to take chance of losing them. Purchased bag liners so should be good to go!!

Cheers!!

Removing the bags makes it a whole lot easier to wash the bike once in a while, and the bike looks pretty cool without them. It is worth understanding and doing. As other have said, turn the key 90 degrees, lift straight up on the handle and the bag retention on the under-side of the bag will release and you can lift it off. Just do it. When putting bags back on, just hold the bag by the handle to support the weight and keep the latch open, then guide the front alignment tang over the rubber covered tang projecting from the subframe member next to the exhaust. This is what makes the bag line up, so as you close the handle you can feel a positive engagement with the latches. Once closed, the bag will not be able to pulled away from the bike, if it moves, try again.

Make sure after u put the bag onto the rubber mount, u line up the two upper tangs on the bag into the open catches on the bike. Once they sit in there, the bag will feel secure. THEN and only then, push the handle down and secure the bag.

Locking the bag down should be pretty smooth. If it's not, stop and adjust until it is. Then make sure the bag lock is pushed down and turn the key. After the first or second time, you'll be a pro.

There ya go...

When in doubt, don't screw with it.

Are you suggesting that the folks at all the dealerships are smart enough to know all about these things, or was it just in 04?

I thought bag liners and an extra lockset for the trunk you will eventually buy come with?

In '04 my dealer didn't even know how to open the glove box.

Liners are not included in Canadian FJRs. Plus, the Canadians are permitted to pay nearly 25-30% more for their FJRs.

Which is exactly why I bought mine in the States in 08.

Don't forget to locktite the screws in the locking mechinism on each bag.

Should be a thread here somewhere.

You will need the safety bit to remove the screws.

If you do not do this, you will loose a bag lock.

Enjoy your new ride.

Unfortunately, both true. I was at my dealer last Saturday for an air filter ($39!), new 2011 $21,000. Dealer principal and his wife both ride FJR's and every time I step foot in there he pulls me aside to swap travel stories. Good guy. So he see's me looking at the one they have on the floor. "Hop on!" he says. I passed, not interested, but I did get the chance to 'hop on' the new VFR and a CBR250R (that lil' bitch is NICE!).

Lets see.. 80mpg, ABS for 5G's and I can live the big girl at home for my 10km commute to work.... why, it would pay for itself in fuel savings!

+1 The new 250's look like they'd be a blast!

I would LOVE to have one.

If only I were 150 lbs lighter.... :(

I don't know how that is in Canadian made up measurements for sure, but it's like cutting me in half....
