Before washing my bike on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago and I sprayed some plastic protectant on the unpainted portion of the side bags and on the undertail section around the liscense plate. Then washed it and thought I was good to go for the commute Monday morning. I took off Monday and about 1/4 mile from my house I was going around a corner about 25mph and the rear tire decieded to pass the front before I had any time to react. There wasn't any sand or oil in the roadway. After I turned around to go home and screaming Mother F'er (I haven't been down on the street since about 93'--reality check!!), I knew the protectant must have gotten on the tire even though I never sprayed it intentionally onto it. I had the bags on, so the bike stayed mostly off the ground, except for a small scratch on the mirror, lower cowl, R/h pipe (as seen in the botton pic) and of course the bag. I never touched the asphalt, maybe because it happened so fast I stayed on top of the bike.

It gave me a reason to shave the bags clean. I've since also fixed the cowl and mirror.

Here's a pic of the bag after my "incident":

I removed the reflector deal, rubber strip and scuffed it up to fill w/ kitty hair and then glaze:

The only thing I wanted to do now was wet sand it, then take a buffer to it and make it glass smooth...

I like the clean look. The plastic protectant thing can happen to anybody. I always spray on the rag and wipe instead of spray on the bike. No chance of over spray that way. I almost had to learn the hard way, too.

Hmmm, somebody on my side of the country who can paint bikes...interesting.

Sorry to hear about the get-off. Glad you didn't sustain any injuries.

Looks nice. Easier to lane split too........every fraction of an inch counts.

Next time you go and apply Armor-All or the equivalent, spray the stuff on first, let it soak in , then wash the bike including the tires and tread. The thing with my method is that the AA soaks in and the residual is washed off, leaving a nice rich black plastic surface where you want it and sticky tread where you need it. Plus, because you've rinsed off the excess AA, it won't collect the dust and you'll run cleaner, longer. ;)

Since repainting the side bags, they've been scuffed from the handle bars on the kids bikes and what not. I ordered a spray on bedliner kit off e-bay to do the bed of my truck and figured what the hell, I'll spray the side bags of the FJR also. I don't need to worry about scuff marks anymore and the stuff is not heavy weight wise.

I think I would have used the spray on liner on the kids!!!!

I know it's functional, but it looked nicer when they were blue. Lawnmowers, Kids Handlebars, Plastic protectant, speed bumps.... what's going to be the next culprit!

Got link?
-Click to link- <---That's who I purchased from and couldn't be happier with their product. If ya search "spray bedliner", you'll see a lot of stuff.

Actually they do have this stuff in different colors including blue. They even have a clear. You can leave the rubber crumb out of the mix and make it smooth if you desire.
