Well, I'm happy to report back that skydiving is a thrilling experience. Its about the most fun you can have with another man (you've known for 7 minutes) very securely strapped onto your backside. I'm sure some of you will have exceptions.
Regardless I must say it is quite a rush jumping out. I had the thrill seeker instructor who like to begin his skydive with a 270 degree flip upon exiting the aircraft. At least he warned me about it first. The following 45 seconds of free fall was the best part. We jumped at 13,500 feet- it was nice and cool, scattered clouds up there. At about 5500 ft the instructor had me pull the rip cord. There is no question when that two person canopy inflates. you decelerate fron 125 mph to 6 mph in a few seconds. The harness strapped around your thighs gets very tight at that moment- scared the heck out of my boys.
The parachute portion of the dive is a little boring after the free fall part. Much quieter however and the relaxed pace allows some sightseeing. The instructor manuevered so that we were along side my daughter and her tandem instructor. That was fun. Then Mr Hot Shot decided to do some swirling trick to dropp altitute faster (he wanted to get the next airplane ride) We did some big circles that cause a much more vertical orientation of the canopy. He almost got to sample my breakfast after that.
The landing was easy- just stick your feet out in front and both of us slide on our butts to a gentle stop.
This was a graduation present for my daughter. She had a great time and is trying to firure out how to do it again. (I'm good for now, maybe next year)
If you've ever thought about skydiving, give it a shot. I was a little nervous but never scared. The equipment is well thought out. I never felt unsafe.
Another check on my list. and a good one at that.
