Ok, I'm really dying to ride and it's frigging freezing up here in New Hampshire. I'm kicking around the idea of going down to Skyline Drive on April 1 and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if the weather should be somewhat agreeable then. I'm planning on trailoring the bike down there and riding from Front Royal, VA as far as I can into NC and back in 4 days. Any advice from the locals would be greatly appreciated...

You'll have about 12hrs on the road to get to Front Royal Va at the northern most end of the Skyline Drive. That's one day, another would be driving home. That leaves two days for riding... The southern most end of the Skyline Drive is the northern most end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. {get off the exit and there is a visitors center behind the gas station where you could get a map of the BRP, or seven miles further south on the BRP at Humpback Rocks Visitor Center} you could continue straight down the BRP to Cherokee NC (its southern most end)... :D I've done the BRP in one day two different times now but it was a long, intense 465 miles both times. (the 465 miles are just the BRP; you would have to add the length of the Skyline Drive) With only two days to ride you might think about overnighting around Grandfather mountain /Lynnville Viaduct area then going back north the second day. Of course, IF the 4 days you mentioned did not include your travel time back and forth then take two days down and two days back (get a chance to see a whole lot more scenery at those types of speed.

Skyline Drive speed limit 35

BRP speed limit 45

Both patrolled by federal officers, :assasin: but I don't know how many one would see in April

The roads mentioned lead along ridge crests the whole way; elevations from approx. 2000 feet to 4000 feet. There are many places where runoff crosses the road and could potentially be ice/black ice at that time of year. Would depend on how the temps. go, has been a mild winter so far....

I lived in Asheville, NC (milepost 358 on BRP) for a few years, so perhaps I can help you. As mentioned, temps and road conditions vary greatly on both BRP and SLD. I was in the area last week and there's still a fair amount of snow on the "backside" of the mountains, where there is little or no sun in the winter. Once on a mid-summer ride, it was 85+ when we left my house. Thirty miles later, on top of Mt. Mitchell, it was 35 degrees.

Both roads are well maintained and the authorities will usually close sections that are risky. So you just follow the detour signs, get back on and motor on.

As for LOE, they are patrolled by Federal Agents, which, believe it or not, is a good thing because if you get busted for being a little too enthusiastic, the offense will not go on your driving record. Obviously, if you're going triple digits, then it's definetaly a bad thing. I always like to ride "The Pace" on those roads - awesome sweeping curves.

I'm not sure what LOE is... but the Blue Ridge Parkway is patrolled by the Feds & any speeding offenses don't go on your record BUT the fines are Hugely HEAVY for speeding.... especially speeding on a bike. If you plan to go over the posted limit of 45 (there are also many spots where the limit is reduced to 35, too) do it with the utmost respect. Using a lot of judgement. I usually won't go much over 10 over. You're asking for a ticket much beyond that.

Also, the weather... weather will be variable that time of the year. The guys closer to the mountains can give you more accuracy as to weather conditions.

Beware of speeding, though.
