Smoke smell

I have a smoke smell coming from the behind my shifter, drive shaft, rear suspension area. It started on a road trip a few months back. I had new PR2's installed at 8000 miles but this didn't seem to start till 12000. you cannot see the smoke, just smell it. At begining of trip is was not there but about 2 days in you could smell it. The bike is a '07 and acts fine when I'm riding. I have looked under it to see if perhaps a piece of tire tread has become lodged in the exhaust somewhere but do not see none. The tire pressure is perfect. I could use some sugestions as to what it may be or perhaps some other known problems. I have tried a search but no luck. Is there some rubber shroud/dust guard from the transmission covering the drive shaft that may be folded back or something? Could use some advice.

 
when the oil filter is removed oil will run down and get on the fairing and maybe soak into the foam pieces. Was the oil changed recently before you noticed the smell?

 
I have noticed a strong "hot or burning" smell from time to time on my 06 AE when rolling to a stop. I have never seen any actual smoke. I never thought of the probably oil soaked foam under the oil filler. I guess it could be that.

Has the oil been changed lately...I ask that because when removing the oil filter, a pool of oil collects between the plastic and engine if precautions are not made. Possible for riding to heat that stuff up and make a smell.

Avoiding the mess:

As seen in the drawing below, when you unthread the old oil filter, some of the oil (shown as orange) unavoidably drips down the engine case and runs over the lowest part of the fairing (small leg of bodywork underneath the oil filter). Invariably, some oil also finds it's way onto the exhaust line, too. So the owner has a little bit of a mess to clean up; you definitely don't want oil collecting in the bodywork crevices!

I have noticed a burnt rubber smell once in a while after a ride, have yet to track down the source. Have had the bike stripped down several times for various maintenance or farkeling didn't see nuttin. Sorry not much help.

As for the oil mess I just remove the lower screw on the tupperware in question and slip something between it and the motor to hold it out far enough to let the oil drain without hitting the foam.

Take a look at the black protective plastic at the front of the drive shaft. It might be possible for some sort of crap to get lodged there.

 
On my 03 the seal at the bevel gear leaked a little and got some on the header. Took some looking but found it and was repaired under warranty twice.

 
I hope it's not the problem, but my bike had a burnt smell when my rectifier/regulator was going bad and actually had burned ends/wires. The bike still ran and since I didn't have a datel I really had no idea what my electrical system was doing.

Just a thought...

Well the first signs other then the smell I thought I was smelling (meaning it wasn't like I saw smoke), was when it was cold and I was running my elect. jacket in Portland traffic. It was rush hour and I was doing a lot of stop and go driving. Not having a datel, I had no idea what draw I was putting on my battery/stator. I also have an Elec. Stator upgrade, so I kind of assumed I was in good shape. Well, the group stopped at a motel to see about checking in and I shut my bike off and had to push start it to get it going. I then knew I had some issues...LOL

I forgot to add that the smell is a burning rubber smell so I will look further to see if something is wedged up in that drive shaft guard. Thank you HappyRider. I believe that this is where the smell is coming from too. Thanks and please keep the replies coming.

Hey bloodhound. I would highly recommend you check out the ground spider at the left front of the engine, under the tank. Mine recently fried itself and is requiring the replacement of the entire main harness. I have the YES warranty. I also could smell something hot or burnt when rolling to a stop, for several months in advance of this failure. The scary thing about this failure is that it can strike with no warning and can shut your engine down instantly. Check this thread.

Me, too. I finally decided that it was caused by my shoe hitting the exhaust pipe when I was getting off the bike. (I don't know how or when my shoe hits the pipe, but it obviously does because of the small, burned smudge on it, and I move around more getting off than while riding... okay, don't go there!)

 
Well, this sounds, to me, like you have a couple of issues compounding on each other.

First, this really sounds to me like you have a French FRJ - more info on this here - clicky.

And, as we all know thanks to the Bin 'O Facts, '07 French FJR's come from the factory pre-charged with smoke. Because, as we all know, all the French smoke too damn much.

So, not only did you get stuck with a French FJR, now the factory-charged smoke is getting out, meaning if you don't act soon, you'll surrender to the next Canadian you meet.

I get a something's-burning smell when I ride in the rain. I figure it's just road crap that got kicked up on the exhaust that's burning off.

My bike smelled that way for the entire summer. Course, it f'n rained all summer...

 
Just a thought....isn't there a ground spider near the ECU connector? That's right above the shifter mechanism and would be a place to take a look, what with the Gen II HighPerformance AutoPyro wiring harnesses being written about lately.

 
Sounds like you may be having the same problem that I experienced with my 07 not too long after I purchased it. Yamaha put some foam rubber material between the fairing and the engine, just ahead of your left foot. The foam on my bike moved to where it was touching the hot exhaust pipe and I actually had smoke coming out from under the left side of the bike. I don't really know of the reason for the foam but I have removed it.
