Whatever you decide to put in your top case be mindful of the weight. There are lots of documented incidences of the subframe breaking.

When riding solo the only time I have ever had the trunk on was when I absolutely had to have the secure cargo capacity. That probably hasn't happened more than a few times in the last 95k miles. Almost always the trunk contents would be work related.

When I carry a passenger I have the trunk on 100% of the time. And, 100% of the time I have *no idea* what's in the trunk, that's pillion's storage space. As well as the right saddle bag ;) I do get the WHOLE left saddle bag for my stuff.

Mine is only on when I have a passenger or I'm on a multi-day trip. Usually my heated liner, cool vest, spare visor, netbook, camera and some shoes.

I much prefer to ride with it off. In certain wind conditions it introduces and aerodynamic shimmy (it goes away if I have my camp kit or a passenger on the back seat). It still feels like I'm shimmying hour after I get off the bike. Very unpleasant.

That being said I just bolted up a Givi mount to my 13. Wonder if that one shimmies too?

When I got my top case I thought I would use it primarily for longer tours (mainly for "aesthetic" reasons like BkerChuck alludes to), but in practice it stays on almost all the time. When touring it carries the stuff I may need on short notice on the road - mainly liners/layers to deal with the wide temperature swings we see in these parts (and hats, shorts, shoes, etc.). For day trips/short runs/solo rides, it's way more convenient to use my Givi remote opener to pop the lid and throw in a couple of helmets and gloves when I park than it is to use the key to open 2 side cases and stuff helmets in there (with one wanting to slide out on the "downhill" side).

Another factor is my running/brake lights on the case. Any time I'm riding at night I much prefer to have the case on because it adds about 200% to the area/intensity of the tail light. Bottom line, it's too useful and easy to use to take it off, and I'm at the point in my life where looking like anything less than a magazine cover model isn't my biggest concern....so it stays on.

For one day weekend rides or commuting, no bags except a tank bag. Any overnighter or trips its always on and loaded with rain gear, sweaters, tool kit, tire kit, maps, water bottle and other items that might be needed along the ride like snacks.

For local rides the FJR is one of the few S/T's that looks good without the sidebags. The ST1300 and Connie, look fugly without the side bags. I've had several S/T owners comment on how nice the FJR looks without bags.

It looks just plain strange without side bags. Not that it looks bad...just strange. :D

No top case (NR tail bag), and no side cases unless on a trip. A small tank bag for little stuff. That's it most all the time. Can't imagine having side cases and top case on with normal daily riding. To each their own though.

On my 2005 FJR it has a factory top box and it is so good to have I do not take it off ,but it dose ruin the look of the bike ( like they do to every bike ) . Its like a supermodel with a pimple on her nose !! . We joke "Dose this top box make my bum look FAT"

On my 2008 FJR that I just got, it dose not have a top box but I will be getting one .

I'm not sure what it really changes. This is my first bike with side bags, and once I went top box on my last bike there was no going back. Once I'm on the bike, I don't even know it's all back there.

It is almost a necessity for me for a secure place to store my helmet when running shopping trips. Helmet + Sena is expensive and I'm not going to just leave it there for someone to take. It won't fit in my sidecase with the Sena attached so that is not an option.

Mine sits on the shelf unless I'm leaving for more than three or four days. I just don't need it for local runs or three-day weekends.

On week-long trips, it carrys my camera (DSLR with two lenses), air compressor and plug kit, travel info, sweater if needed, yada, yada.

I voted depends as I use it when my wife needs a back rest rest or when I am on a trip.

Just returned from a trip to New England and used it to hold my extra gear. Warm gear when it's cool out and cool gear when it's when

it's warm out. Also put my lap top in there wrapped up in my gear so suppress vibration.
