Since it's over 700 miles from my house to the meet I figure why not add another 300 miles and turn the ride up into an IBA certifiable journey? Anyone with information on how to do this and/or if anyone else is interested doing such a ride please add a note here. Thanks.

Tarzana to Park City Marriott via Sacramento, CA (I5) = 1,060 miles (boring, though)

Tarzana to Park City Marriott via Flagstaff, AZ (I40, US 89 - The Westernmost road in the West) 1,038 miles - or, maybe, head up 191 through Tuba City and Moab = 1,041 miles)

Leave home at 04:00, roughly 15 hours in the saddle and a couple for food, fuel, contingencies and R&R, arrive at WFO at 21:00 in time for a late dinner.

Quite do-able (unless the temperatures are quite hot).

Hi Joseph, Here's a route that I made up that you might consider. 1034 miles total that will be much more interesting and memorable than a freeway jaunt.(yuck) If you want to look at it closer and have microsoft streets and trips, I can forward it too you. If you decide to go ahead and do this, I'll volunteer to act as your end witness in Utah.

This route will send you north on 14 to hwy395, toward hwy120 in Lee Vining. East on 120 to Benton, then hwy6 to Warm Springs. South on Hwy375 (ET Highway) to Alamo. North out of Alamo on 318 to hwy6 and Ely, north on US93 Alt. to Wendover, then an easy ride into Park City via I-80. Go this route with a departure time of 4.00am and you'll be early for dinner and arrive easily before sun down. ;)

Good luck whatever route you choose. If you need any advice with your route as to where appropriate gas receipts may be needed, don't hesitate to ask.

First of all, Hi Ian, good to "speak" with you. I hope all is well with you and yours.

Your offer to act as my arrival witness is appreciated and I may very well take you up on it. We can work that out as the time approaches.

The route you put forth is quite interesting and I am intrigued. I started skiing at Mammoth over 45 years ago and have spent cosiderable time noodling around in that neck of the woods throughout the decades so I know 14/395/6/120 fairly well. I have even driven south on 93 comming back from a trip to Yellowstone quite a while back. I assume that the southerly jog down to Alamo is in there just to get the mileage up over a thousand and, based on your comments about the gas receipts, I assume that you or someone you know has done this route as an IBA ride.

I do not have the Microsoft Streets and trips software but I will put the waypoints into Mapquest's new multiple stop feature, take a closer look at the route and then drop you a note.

Thanks!

The Tonopah to Alamo segment is simply stunning! Try and work in a stop to the ET Cafe if you get a chance. This is the kind of road that you'll be able to make some serious time ;) I should know as I did the ET highway 7 times one day as part of another ride.

The Alamo to Wendover segment is also similarly fun and makes that route through Nevada totally what the FJR was designed for!

Here's an average looking picture of what the road looks like between Tonopah and Alamo:

Some more links for that stretch.

Thanks for the ET Hiway info!

On the one hand, those wide open spaces do beckon. OTOH, I really don't anticipate riding extremely fast on any part of the trip (well, maybe just for a while) so the NV heat may trump the NV open-hiway benefits. Fortunately, there is time to tweak the possible routes and, as WFO 6 approaches, make the decisions.

It looks like I'll be heading to WFO from the LA area. I'll be doing it on Friday instead of Thursday though.

I'll be at a conference through Thursday night, so my plan is to just take the 15 all the way up. Its going to be a boring ass ride, but at least I'll be able to make it in time for the Friday night dinner!
