OK, I know it's Friday...anyway, haven't been to Canada since I was a kid.

I live in Idaho. I know I need a passport.

As for border crossings--how long does it usually take--do biker's have an advantage over cars?

Also, I assume I can use Credit Cards there--what about currency--exchange US dollars when I get there? Thanks for help with the basics..I like to know what to expect so I can focus on the riding.

Absolutely. When it's 3 a.m. and they have one person on duty and in the next building....they place a cone in the middle of the lane to stop you from entering the country. If you were a car it would completely obstruct your patch and block entry. With a bike you can ride right around it. Just ignore the camera flash of your plate....they likely won't catch you until you're deep into the province. ;)

Seriously. I just crossed the border twice in the IBR. Once in North Dakota and back north of Bonners Ferry. Both were less than 2 minutes with no traffic in front of me.

I didn't have so much as a Canadian quarter to my name and used my credit card. Most places would have taken U.S. cash and returned Canadian currency.

I did have my Passport with me, but they only asked coming back in for it. I wouldn't now go to Canada without one...especially if you have one anyway.

Yep.

Our experience after WFO-8 the first of August.

Nope, you're in the same line. At the entry above Bonner's Ferrry, Canada required passport, scanned it, "why are you here and for how long, have a good trip" and did not require taking helmets off. My wife was on her bike, me on mine - required to go through solo.

Coming back in South of Osoyoos, US required us to take off our helmets while he scanned our passports, asked how long we'd been in Canada and why. Had us both pull in at the same time and had us forward of the normal "driver by the booth entrance" - I wondered why (are we getting searched???). Nope, while we were putting our helmets back on, he put a car into the normal stopping spot. Very courteous but quick and to the point, no chit chat....

They don't allow Credit Cards in Canada  Seriously they do.

The 2 VISA cards I have a 3% service fee for using them in a foreign country - Canada and Mexico are foreign. When we where there the exchange rated was about Canadian was 92% of the US $$. We used our cards for gas, motel, and dinners. For lunches we used cash. As soon as we got into Canada, we stopped at a bank and got Canadian $$. If you use US $$ , they do not give you an the exchange rate and you will get Canadian for change. Double loss.

When we're were there gas was about $1.02 to $1.05 per litter - 3.72 liters/gal.

Have fun!

Fully loaded it didn't take me 10 minutes to cross into Canada. They never even gave the bike a second glance, but they did go over my passport and I had to go inside for a few minutes to answer a few questions since my passport was new and I'd not been in Canada for years.

You need a passport to live in Idaho?

Yes. And they have gas stations, TV, radio, and heated buildings too! They even drive on the right side of the road. Quite civilized considering! :D

Crossed into, and out of Canada 2 times each on my recent trip. Getting into the Can I waited roughly 5 mins each time. Coming back in to the USA the wait was around 20 mins. It will vary by crossing. Do a search for Canada border crossing times. There is a real time wait site I saw.

Thanks everyone for helpful advice. I'll post a ride-report with some pics when I get back. I'm routing out a trip through Golden BC, Glacier Park, Revelstoke....I'm pretty damned excited! And to the smart-***** (of which I am one myself): I posted this on Friday JUST FOR YOU :yahoo:

Thanks everyone for helpful advice.

I just checked Canadian entry requirements and folks from Idaho are required to have a Visa.....

 ...

:clapping: ...

Have a great trip. Let me know of you see mountain tops in the Canadian Rockies. I think it a "lie". Both times we've been there, we've not see the tops!
