My '04 started ticking this past summer, at about 17k miles. I have another year and a half of YES, so I didn't sweat it. I also ride every day to work, and didn't want to be without for any extended period, so I wasn't planning to deal with it any time soon.

Anyway, I was at the dealer last week to buy some brake pads, and mentioned the recall to the service guy. He looked me up, and sure enough I was on the list. I also asked him to listen to the ticking, just to start the conversation. He said, "bring it in next week and we'll swap out the TPS and I'll get the rest of the guys to listen to the noises."

So yesterday morning I brought it in for the TPS work and had them put in some NGK iridium plugs and sync the fuel injectors while it was open on Yamaha's dime. He called me today to say it was all done. I asked about the ticking, and he said the consensus in the shop was that it could be nothing, but that he talked to Yamaha and he could replace the exhaust valves and guides under warranty if that's what I wanted to do.

I'm within 3500 mi of needing a valve adjustment, and in a month or so up here in Boston I'll be thinking about putting her away for the winter anyway, so I said "makes sense to me!" I'm going to give it to them for a month starting around Christmas, a time when it would be snoozing in my garage anyway.

I was all set for arguments and phone calls and hassle, but instead it worked out about as well as could be. No argument, no loss of riding season, and no $400 payment for a valve adjustment. Can't beat that!

To anyone in the Boston area: a thumbs-up for Riverside Motor Sports, in Somerville. Chris and Tom are the service guys.

Visited Riverside last summer when my brother was dealer shopping for a bike. Nice sales staff; they left us alone to look, then just asked if we had questions. He didn't buy from them, but I had a good impression.

Had the bike in for 16k service yesterday. Got a professional vibe from the place. I'd go back.

My only complaint was that I told the service writer that I'd be walking around the area waiting for it to be done and he didn't pass that on to whoever was taking over in the afternoon (I didn't get names. Didn't figure it mattered). Many profuse apologies were tendered when I wandered by mid-afternoon and barely recognized my bike as they had washed it. It still creeps me out to see reflections in my pipes. ;)
