Not to mention the "Loud pipes save..." crowd.

Apparently?, the sound is very, very, important? MotoGP took it into account for the regulations applied to the motorcycles of their new series -- 4-strokes (wanted to make sure the sound was good & enough...).

Way back..., Suzuki agonized over how to sell their new big tourer/sportbike (the T-500 Titan) in the mid-'60s to a market that idolized 'potato-potato'. It was a 2-stroke, you see...! Well, they installed some of the biggest, most voluminous, (echo-chambers) mufflers ever seen -- but, not before seriously considering a device that played-back more 'melodious' sounds (the sounds the market wanted to hear -- 'potato-potato').
