Several days ago, while riding in Chicagoland, I spotted a large camera hanging off the underside of an interstate overpass bridge. I was over the posted limit when I noticed it and was unable to slow in time to pass it legally. I initially assumed it was a traffic congestion monitor used by news media. I later found out from more than one Chicago area FJR rider that those cameras take photos of speeders as they pass. Does anyone think I should check my mailbox? BTW time of day was such that traffic was VERY light with excellent visibility.

No, don't check your mail. If you just ignore it then it'll go away. Don't ever, ever open your mailbox again. Maybe you should move away. Do you have any mafia friends?

If they were out there for speed control, in about two weeks when you get your mail it will be there to greet you for your performance award with a smile on your face and the camera clocked you.

It seem that the LEO's can find more ways to free up time so they can have more time for the Donut shop, make mine a double chocolate and hold the calories :yahoo:

weekend rider :)

In Oregon, it is illegal to use photo radar on interstates.

Also, every photo radar I have ever seen takes a flash photo to clearly identify both vehicle and driver.

I am skeptical that it is an automated speed enforcement camera.

The ones on bridges USUALLY are for traffic monitoring. I wouldn't worry about it. Are you sure it wasn't a light used for a sign mounted on overpass?

Most places are using them more at traffic lights.

I think there are only a few places that are using them for speed enforcement.

Here in the People's Republic of Maryland, we have both kinds of speed cameras, those mounted and those inside the damn Ford Windstars that they keep moving around. The neighboring Disney-North (DC) has fixed ones only. Don't want to get into the never-ending radar detector thread, but a detector will pick up the radar that these are run off of. If snapped, you get a nice sheet of paper with front and rear photos to show both you plate and face and instructions. Believe it or not, the system here is run in entirety (includes fee collection for profit) by a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin!!!

The ones on the poles will flash, I know that one for sure. Some neighbors have gotten awards from the van-mounted cameras and said that they never saw a flash. Both kinds here are set exactly 10 mph over the limit, but yours may be different. There was a Washington Post article a while back about how many of the things are broken, so you may be lucky from that aspect, too.

Either way, you'll know in a couple of weeks. The one nice thing about the cameras is that they are sent to the vehicle's registered owner, so you as an operator do not get points on your driver's license.

if it was facing toward you, then you have to wonder how they'll know WHICH bike it was unless you have a front-facing tag.

Through certain "business associates", I was able to obtain the photograph that was taken of you, Breadman. The good news is you won't be ticketed for speeding. The bad news is you WILL be receiving a $500 fine for riding without proper riding gear....

Unfortunately the camera appeared to be in position to see the rear of my bike. Lesson learned: If I'm gonna worry this much about a ticket, I should never have sped in the first place! I gots ta man up!!
