ok, newbie tire question, new to my fjr also.

I am more of a slab tourer than sport, with PR somethings on it right now. I would not call myself an aggressive rider either.

I am sure I will be looking for tires soon.

Is there a silver bullet/good tire out there that will give me high mileage, or will the tradeoff be a harsh ride?

Money is always an issue with me.

Most likely the best tire for you would be PR2

P.S. I'm sure this thread won't last long

We all have to learn somehow. Better to get it over with early in the game.

I will agree on the Pilot Road 2 as well. Although I see that the Pilot Road 3 seems to do pretty well for mileage in a straight line. Aggressive cornering seems to wear the PR3 a little faster than the 2. Of course, that is just my experience and opinion.

If indeed money is an issue, consider the darkside. Pricewise, my fav is a PR2 on the front. On the back, I'm lucky: I own an FJR. The Michinlin Pilot Exalto fits perfectly on the back rim. I've got 32k miles on my rear tire and still going strong. Read about my journey to the darkside, beginning here: CLICKY.

Gunny to the darkside! My fave front was the Pirelli Diablo Strada but that's been discontinued so I now run the Pirelli Angel. I like it.

I run a General G-Max on the back, pictured here. Tracks like it's on a rail. Superb in the southeastern daily wet. And especially good, as you say, when money is an issue. I was spending $160+ x 2 (sometimes 3) per year for back tires. The General tire was $118 delivered and should last at least 2 yrs if not 3.

eta: Here is my post of the tire mounted and some first impressions, needed modification and pressure determination. YMMV.

PR2 for any style riding. I've track day with them, rode through frog stranglers and many times cruising above 7k.

PR3's are not worth the extra $$ and all other tires suck*. JMIO

Darkside is the way to go for slabing it.

When the P-Angel on the front wore out, I replaced it with a PR2, which is what's on the rear. When the rear PR2 is done, I have a DS in the garage waiting.

By then it will probably be time for a new rear shock, but that's another story. It's always something

+1 to the Darkside....PR2 on the front.

4 years + 40,000 miles on my Michelin Pilot A/S Plus, although I must admit, I'll probably only get another 30 to 32 thousand out of what remains. Maybe another 3 years if I'm lucky.
