I liked using SPOT for long rides so that my family could follow along when I was travelling for multiple days. No more. It is those annual fees that caused me to cancel my SPOT account. Compared to the annual use fees the cost of the device is insignificant.

At $165 subscription minimum a year, I'll have to think about how often I'm out of iPhone find me range. I wish it were more often. Go great on a scathey dash though.

I don't love the annual fee, and the messaging feature is really useless, except to just show where you went and when you were there. But it's very nice to have that almost guaranteed emergency help button everywhere. (Only "almost" because under extreme cover the signal could be blocked, but it's good almost everywhere.)

I really should have it on every ride, especially solo, but I usually don't think to. Even though it's an annual subscription. So that's my bad. Still, it's great for peace of mind--for me and my wife at home.

Not mentioned yet, but previous threads about this gadget convinced me to wear it on a belt loop so if I go east and the bike goes south, I've got the Spot with me; don't have to climb down a cliff with a broken leg to find it. ;)

You can use Spotwalla a free phone app to share your tracks. For safety a personal locator beacon works great and is much cheaper per year than a Spot.

My technologically disabled wife does not care to follow my tracks. She appreciates a text or phone call daily to know I am ok. Works for us.

Thanks for posting. Any money saved is money for a day on the FJR!

I bought a Spot after a rider's family wondered where he was for over 3 weeks (and it could have been much much longer) when he went off the road on a goldwing not far from here... https://gl1800riders.com/forums/4-general-mc-message-board/112708-missing-rider-6.html

I do quite a lot of riding where no cell reception exists. I hit the locate button after intersections so someone at least would have an idea of last known location. If I go bye bye that's my fault / my risk but I'd sure hate to have people wondering. In this country you can miss a turn and disappear. And 500 mile days can put you who the hell knows where.

Also having it work in and out of Canada is nice. My wife insists on renewing every year for the peace of mind my texts give her, and all i have to do is touch a button.

I've been using Spot since 2008. Wife (and friends) enjoy following me around. I'll suck up the $160 as the cost of doing business.

I was not charged an access fee or tax when I signed up yesterday. Device is smaller than I thought. About half the size it looked in the pictures. Very pleased. I spend a lot of time riding alone. Some of it in places no one else knows I am. A fair amount where there's spotty cell coverage. And I like hitting one button and leaving a track. Easy to share your trip using spot's website. And their phone app is way cool. I turned on my new spot, opened the free app, and in seconds was looking at an aerial view of my house. Kind of drove home the immediacy and accuracy of this tech.
