Okay, I convinced the family to let me attempt my first SS1K. As I type this, it is 6:50pm PST on Wednesday August 2, and I am planning on departing at 4:00 am PST Thursday August 3 - just over nine hours or so from now.

I'm not sure whether this will qualify as an SS1000 (miles) or SS1600 (kilometres) given the ride will take place entirely in western Canada. My planned route has me traveling in a circular route departing from Kamloops BC and heading north (Hwy 5) to Valemount BC, east (Hwy 16) through the Rockies into Edmonton, Alberta then south (Hwy 2) to Calgary, Alberta and finaally west (Hwy 1) back through the Rockies to Kamloops.

Total planned distance is about 1720 kms or approx 1070 miles.

Now the LIVE bit - I am going to attempt to post live progress of my attempt via my Blackberry as I make stops, see points/items of interest, etc. If all goes well, the route should take me around 17 to 18 hours to complete at a somewhat leisurely pace. Hopefully I will also get some good pictures along the way to share with you all.

I am really looking forward to this challenge and will update you as I go! See you in about nine hours.

Rich

Good Luck and be safe, if you are in doubt, don't force yourself. Take it easy. If you think you really need a break, take it.

Well its 4:02 am and just got my gas and receipt - weather looks good and so next stop is Valemount BC in about 3 hours or so. See you then.

Rich

Made it to Valemount which is just over 200 miles. It is now 7:25am PST. Pretty uneventful ride - nice scenery up through Blue River - a wee bit chilly through the valley with some low lying cloud and mist but emerged into spectaculer sunshine just south of town.

Next heading throug gorgeous Mt Robson park and then through Jasper to next stop at Edson, Alberta.

Talk to you soon,

Rich

The sound of LD cherries popping around here is almost deafening :yahoo:

...and now a live SS1K, gotta love it.

10:40am PST - well after 400 miles I am in Edson, Alberta. I am a bit surprised how good I feel - not the least bit tired and no *** pain on the stocker seat.

Have seen tonnes of wild life and spectacluar mountains, lakes, valleys, etc. after coming through Jasper National Park. I gotta say I'm not terribly religious but there is definitely a higher power out there. What a ride so far!

Next stop is Edmonton in a couple of hours - will be at the half way point and the diagonal corner on my route.

Talk to you in a bit.

Rich

Nice to read the live reports. I'll bet as the day goes on, the reports will get shorter ;) You are half way there, its easy now, right? Ride safe!

12:45pm PST - just topped up the tank on the south side of Edmonton - halfway home!

Ride from Edson to Edmonton was a bit boring as it is mostly flat and straight - lots of prairie land and farms. Did get to stretch the legs of the FJR a bit and no LEOs!

On to Calgary now via Hwy 2 south - should take about 3 hours.

So far making pretty good time and barring disaster should finish in about 9 hours.

Talk to you from Calgary.

Rich

Ps - did I mention how awesome this feels?!?!
