Suppose a potential sport touring bike buyer considers the Honda ST1300 and Yamaha FJR to be equally desirable in all respects. Our hypothetical buyer has short chubby legs with a 29 inch inseam.

Considering only characteristics related to rider inseam (mounting, stopping at lights, slow speed manuvering, etc) which is the better choice between the two motorcycles for our inseam challenged friend?

Thanks

Buy a sportser.

Just kidding, couldn't help myself.

Actually, I have no idea.

Or a BMW F800ST

Or a Suzuki Bandit or Triumph Sprint St and have it lowered.

The FJR is pretty heavy with no leg leverage.

I have a 29" inseam and riding it was way easy, almost effortless... but the getting gas in the rain and stopping on gravel totally sucked. Mine was lowered to within an inch of it's life.

Jim I put 16k miles on an ST, and test rode an 07FJR... they are really quite alike seat height wise, the feej may be ever so slightly taller.

But! Either one could be modified by adjusting the seat, shaving a little off the top and narrowing the sides... so I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor by any means.

An owner near me is "inseam challenged" and we recently installed these: Kouba Links

He also wears boots with a 1" sole and NOW he feels secure. He is not an "super-aggressive" rider and though we've ridden on some twisty roads, he hasn't touched anything, even his peg feelers.

I have a 29" inseam myself, and between the FJR and the ST1300 there is not enough of a difference for this to be a purchase decision criteria. They are too close. I chose the FJR based on other items, liked the adjustable seat height and had it on the low position for the first thousand or so miles. Been riding with it in the high position since then for more comfort seat to peg geometry and it does fine. Of course my 'fine' definition allows for toes only on the ground both sides, or one flat foot at a time.

Your comfort level may vary. So far I have not drop tested the sliders.

I tried both, and went with the FJR... My inseam is a bit over 29, and I can't flatfoot the FJR, but it was easier and felt safer than the ST.

My $0.02
