I have the Starcom system and used it today for the first time. I love the system but I can't figure out how to get the Escort X-50 radar detector to make enough noise through the Starcom system to hear it.

I connected it with mono plugs on both ends but the detector isn't loud enough to hear very well.

Has anyone figured out how to get some noise out of this system?

I have the same setup and had the same exact problem. You need to get a cable (Cab36?) from Jeff at SportBikeEffects.com that is mono on one end and stereo on the other. Count the black rings on the plug, 1=mono 2=stereo. Once I had that it worked fine. I plugged mine in to the phone jack on the Starcom. One thing I can't quite figure out though is why my passenger also gets the alert in her helmet...thought it was only going to sound in mine.

Just going from memory here, but I think there is a Dip switch setting internally where you can turn that off for the passenger. Check your manual.

I think your right about the switch, I just noticed it yesterday when every time the detector started going off I would have Michelle jamming her index finger between my shoulderblades....finally figured out the correlation. Cruising along yesterday I got blasted with Laser. If I had been speeding I would have been nailed because I could see the whites of his eyes by the time he pulled the trigger.

I suggest you buy a H.A.R.D. system to put a LED in you helmet, then you can have audio & visual detection telling you where the LEO's are.

FYI: In Northern California the LEO's drive around with the radar constantly on, so I get detection 1/2 mile away. In So. Cal they use instant on, because they need the $$ and the quota's.

Is there a reason the cable 36 costs so much? Isn't it just a cable with a stereo plug on one end and a mono on the other?

Do you know how it is wired?

Are both stereo leads wired to the single mono?

Thanks.

I don't know how it's wired but it is an isolated cable. The prices are set by the manufacturer so I can't offer any help here.

If all you need is a cable that connects a mono device (the X50) to a stereo device (starcom) then you can use a stereo cable and get a mono to stereo adapter jack at radio shack. They may even have a jack that adapts the other way, mono cable to stereo input, so you can use your mono cable.

Nope, I tried that and it didn't work. I even tried it through the escort GLI and that didn't work either. But in saying that, at that point I thought there may be a problem with the audio output of the Passport and sent it back to them while at the same time ordering the isolated cable from Jeff. Since I got them both back at the same time (the detector with a new audio socket) and it now works, I'm not sure if it was the cable or the detector....If it helps any, the cable from radio shack was not an "isolated cable".

Have you tried using the alert lights instead?

There's another one that I've also seen that is even brighter...but i can't find the link anymore.

Anybody know what "isolated" means if it is different than just wiring both stereo leads to a single mono?
It means there's an isolation transformer in the cable.
