I just bought a Starcom and will be hardwiring it underneath the seat. I will keep the cables tucked into the space between the seats but am wondering if they have to be weather protected in some fashion. Is it going to be a problem for the unit if the cables get wet?

Them getting wet should not be a problem and has not been a problem for my Starcom. The connectors must be sealed because they have been through quite a bit of rain/hail/dew etc.

Note: make sure not to crush the connectors as you may have a problem getting them to work for you. I simply keep them coiled under the seat completely when not in use so they don't get messed up.

Thanks, I will definitely make sure I keep them tucked away. I generally ride alone without music etc... but it will be nice to be able to communicate with my GF and listen to some tunes when traveling for some distance. It will be a new experience having someone squawking in my ear as I'm trying to become one with my environment....
