I've searched the battery topics and simply think I need a new one.

My 2005 FJR did not start Saturday. Lights came on as did the dashboard information, but cranking was weak and intermittent. The bike had been attached to a Battery Tender all winter. It is the original battery.

I tightened the battery terminals and checked fuses - all OK. I reattached the battery tender and the light was green on Sunday, just as it was when I tried to start it on Saturday. Same problem.

I jump started the bike from my car and it fired up right away. Then I turned it off and it did not start by itself.

So, is the recommendation to just go to Bike Effects and buy a new battery, or does anyone recognize any other potential problem I should check?

Thank you,

Ron

That's an odd one and does seem to lend itself to the weak battery theory. Stock 2005 batteries are getting to be 5 years old now and it if it won't charge and hold much capacity...it's time.

Maybe, now, you do?

Have you had it charged (with a charger) -- the FJR FSM gives very detailed descriptions of the Yamaha recommended charging procedures -- and its condition checked by a technician?

Do you suspect the 'tender/maintainer' is not maintaining -- or, worse yet, killing your battery through over-charging?

You're welcome

Sounds like a bad battery to me.

Best option is to get a cheap DVM (Digital Voltmeter) and do some checking.

Ron,

My WR450 did that a couple years ago. It was working fine at the end of the season,on the tender most of the winter. Come spring and it was stone dead. A $100.00 dollars and a new Yuasa, life was good!

I had to leave the house before putting my DVM on it. I'll do that this evening.
