Dr. Rich and I traveled down south

for the 6th Annual West Coast "Because We Can" Ride-to-Eat lunch in Guadalupe.

About a 700 mile round trip, so

it was a very casual couple of days.

We rode down on Wednesday, enjoyed the lunch, stayed in Arroyo Grande that night,

and returned to NorCal on Thursday, ...the last stinkin' day of the year the last day of the stinkin' year.

(Had to rephrase that, before MEM called me on it. :D )

The venerable Dean Tanji organized the event, and it went very smoothly.

Good food (steaks!), excellent service, and a groovy atmosphere.

Another group of FJRForum dudes made the wet ride up from SoCal,

and we all shared a table.

I think it was meant to be a members' IBA gathering, but, what the hell.

We went anyway, and were treated with courtesy.

Dean dropped by our table and made us feel welcome.

And an actual Iron Butt dude - Carver - even sat with us, however reluctantly. :D

The trip looked like this -

Heading south, early.

I love riding - anywhere. To be on the road. Every time. Every road.

Probably just like most of you guys, huh?

IMG_6879.jpg

Rich is a smooth, steady rider. Easy to ride with him.

(It's when his helmet is off, that he's insufferable.)

IMG_6886.jpg

The sky threatened all morning, but it didn't actually rain on us

until we were just an hour or so from our destination.

IMG_6892.jpg

A quick coffee stop, late morning.

IMG_6902.jpg

And into the moisture for a bit.

Not at all unpleasant.

IMG_6907.jpg

IMG_6920.jpg

Approaching Guadalupe. Lots of stuff is grown in this area. Great soil and weather.

IMG_6942.jpg

IMG_6950.jpg

Another quick stop - in Pismo Beach.

IMG_6761.jpg

IMG_6757.jpg

Rich said, "Come on, Mike. The drinks are on me."

IMG_6763.jpg

Lunch.

Our group -

(L to R)

Dr. Rich (Rich), RedTail (Rich) , Draggon Rider (Randy), djbill (Bill),

Fairlaner (Richard), FJRBluesman (Simon), & sin loki (Daniel).

(Not shown -dcarver (Don) and tcfjr (Brian). Outside, smoking dope, ...probably. I don't know.)

IMG_6767.jpg

Also saw jwhite518 (Jerry) and chatted briefly with turbo dave 98 (Dave).

Fairlaner and FJRBluesman.

IMG_6768copy.jpg

I really have never met most of the IBA group, but perhaps some of you Iron Butt fellows

will see some other familiar faces in this crowd.

IMG_6782.jpg

IMG_6779.jpg

When he's sleeping, Dr. Rich keeps his mustache in a little cage on the nightstand.

Feeds it crickets.

IMG_6777.jpg

Presidente Carver.

IMG_6778.jpg

Dr. Rich and RedTail, hanging on every word.

IMG_6775.jpg

Forum fellows.

L to R -

Dr. Rich, FJRBluesman (molesting my lid), dj bill, and Draggon Rider

IMG_6789.jpg

sin loki and dcarver.

IMG_6788.jpg

Dr. Rich, tcfjr (Brian- temple city fjr. Get it?) dcarver (coveting), and sin loki (Daniel - the "kid")

IMG_6796.jpg

Okay. After lunch, Rich acted as my tourguide,

and we rode all over the area, before going to our motel.

He'd lived and worked in this part of California

for many, many years ....back before it became a state.

It was clearing up, and the afternoon was gorgeous.

As usual, I'm on the edge of my seat :)

OM - re: the day you rode home, shouldn't that be "...Thursday, ...the last stinkin' day of the stinkin' year ?! My case anyway - the 24 000 kms on the Feej notwithstanding.

Looking around. Grateful for the sunshine.

Here and there.

Just outside Owosso.

Rich can probably better identify these particular spots. I was pretty drunk by now.

I think this was Pismo Beach.

IMG_6805.jpg

We made a visit to this little market, to grab a couple of brews for the room.

IMG_7037.jpg

We checked into our motel and then rode back out for some evening eats.

Dinner was pizza at the Klondike Cafe. Neat place, but I got no pictures. (Sorry, HTRJ.)

Then back to our room, bedtime brews, and sleep. It had been a long day.

(Rich had the "little beer". :D )

IMG_7050.jpg

I slept well, but at some hour in the middle of the night, I woke up,... feeling a bit uneasy.

I rolled over, and saw Dr. Rich, sitting on the side of his bed....staring at me.......naked.

(I just made that up! ......He was actually standing.)

Trying to entertain here. Y'all still with me?

Up before dawn, and we decided to just power back up 101 and home.

It was cold and a little foggy, but a beautiful morning for riding.

Hell. Every morning is a beautiful morning for riding.

Home by midday.

Thanks for the company, Rich.

Great seeing you SoCal fellows.

Thanks for looking in and commenting, forum.

Please feel free to share your thoughts, or even hijack if you must.

This'll be a good year, I think.

WONDERFUL ! as usual, OM. Great shots of beautiful scenery and entertaining narrative.

BTW, impressive kissies hickeys kissies  on FJRBluesman

Thanks OM...great stuff as always. Great to see some of the other Cali gang out there...that's pretty scary about Dr. Rich though. You must have a chastity belt on though to feel secure enough to keep calling him for rides.

Looks like you had great weather...even with the pouring rain. :)

Looks like some great steak was had...though I didn't see ANY pictures of that.

Happy New Year! :clapping:

Mighta topped yourself with that first day's pics in particular, OM!! Totally had me in the picture riding the coast on a beautiful winter day. Seems like if you get a good winter day on the Central Coast, you really get a good one. Sounds like that night's incident with Doc Rich mighta been pretty unnerving, though. (No details, please.)

Thanks for the write-up! I had a good time and got to see some cool bikes! The guys I rode with ( some anyway ) were nervous about riding in the rain, so we just slabbed up and back. But I'll wander the back roads to that little tavern again, just to get another steak.

And yes indeed I think your right about it going to be a great year to ride!

Great write-up... Nice to put a faces w/names....

For once I am glad you didn't have your camera handy...

I used to really enjoy Old Michael's ride reports, until I saw the lies he has in them since I was at this event, I now know better. So I'll post pix of what was really there. Enjoy.

We all know Michael is just pure bull and he is.

OMCow.jpg

The Far Western Tavern had that real western feel, you know with deer heads mounted all over the place and prized bull heads on the wall too. I twas very good, located in an old building in Guadalupe's bustling downtown center of farm land USA. The food was good, hot, and the people were friendly.

100_5466.jpg

Some of the first bikes to arrive.

100_5467.jpg

Our bikes got rather dirty going down the roads from Santa Maria to Guadalupe. Some had to buy new bikes because of it. We don't like dirty bikes in SoCal.

100_5468.jpg

The many bikes in the parking lot.

100_5491.jpg

TurboDave even showed up in a real cool hat. I think Fairlaner was jealous. ;)

100_5484.jpg

Old Michael was, well.... You know....

OMAntlers.jpg

Fairlaner posted a SoCal ride for this event too. Many chimed in, and weather permitting we'd go. Well…. DJBill (bill), Fairlaner (Richard), Redtail (Richard), Draggon Rider (Randy), and FJRBluesman (Simon) met at the local Shell station in Encino, CA and the 101 Frwy, at about 7:45am.

It was all fun, I had a good time, glad to see old friends and meet new freinds.

Nice post OM! You're definitely right, any time is a good time for riding (minus the foot of white **** and 40mph wind gusts and 20 degree temps outside my door right now!)

That's ok, I've just picked up a nice little Arctic Cat Z440 for . . . ahem. . .the kids! Forgotten how fun snowmobiling is! Anyway, keep up the great ride reports!

I just received a PM from Dr. Rich that described the above incident from a different point of view. It being a PM I am not, of course, at liberty to disclose the exact content, but apparently, Dr. Rich was not naked at all, but there was someone in the room that was naked. Some of the words and phrases used in the message were; "three inch", "size doesn't matter", "not that there's anything wrong with that", "Rock Hudson", and, opaquely, "SweetJesusSpongeBobSquarePants", the last uttered from behind a locked bathroom door while Dr. Rich was outside, frantically warming his bike up.

Quite honestly, I have no idea which story has more veracity. One the one hand, we have Dr. Rich, a man close to my own age, is oh-so-slightly overweight, sports a cool mustache, and who is drop-dead good looking, all attributes that I share. On the other hand, we have Old Michael, a relatively youthful specimen, whose "pretty boy" good looks, Mapplethorpe-like skill with a camera, and an ability to compose humorous bon mots that have consistently entertained Forumites everywhere.

As the Forum knows, I am never one to cast aspersions, and always have a kind word for everybody, so I will not be coming to any public conclusions here as to which story is more believable. I will note, however, that my favorite college football team, the mighty USC Trojans beat Boston College in the Emerald Bowl.

Congratulations on your team's win. But you suck eggs for reminding me. At least Oregon fried the condoms Trojans this year.

Old Michael: Great pictures with honest and fair commentary as usual. Gotta watch out for Walruses I hear!

So far I say, the whole thing looks like a Friday BS session to me!

Sorry I had to miss it!

Glad it's Saturday!

Rain isn't as scary after experiencing some Oregon sunshine, is it Rich?
