I have 26K on my 2005. I am going to be changing tires and replacing the fork oil. So I figure I should probably check the steering head. In the old days I would just tap the jam nut until there was no play in the steering head. But all the new high tech stuff....................Do I need a special spanner? Should I just forget about the steering head since the bike handles fine? What do you guys think?

I've seen it done with a screwdriver and rubber mallet, but the spanner tool is probably the recommended way.

A nine inch pipe wrench will grab the notches pretty good when set right. You just have to torque by feel.
I am thinking the shock adjust wrench for my SV will grab the notches on that nut.

I am going to try it this weekend.
