Allow me to embarrass myself
Had to carry my pelican case a few hundred miles so I needed my aux fuel back on the bike (holds the pelican case). Well, I have a high mounted Whelen third brake light and a fuel pump so two harnesses to connect and a few bolts and I should be in business.
Went about 20 miles and downshifted for a stop sign. Went from 3 -> 2 and then the dreaded shift light right in the middle of the road. NOT GOOD!
I got a SH_52 before shutting down. Now what?
We'd have a hard time getting her on a tow truck in 2nd gear. I seem to remember a trick to get it to neutral. Oh shoot. In my haste to get the aux tank/pelican holder back on I neglected to strap my tools back on. I don't even have a 4mm Allen to get the side panel off and get at the actuator.
Auto parts store is half mile away, but can I leave the bike in the middle of the street? Aghghgh! Let me phone a friend (happens to work for Yamaha).
We go through some basic troubleshooting. SH_52 means power was interrupted to the YCCS. Do you have brake lights? Nope. Jackpot. My harness for the third brake light had rubbed through some insulation and shorted to the subframe. 15A signal fuse changed--wrapped the questionable connection in tape. Voila. YCCS must have working brake signal to operate (in addition to the other inputs). Back in action.
Many lessons here. Posted in case somebody else gets this code. I hadn't realized the severity (stranded on a busy street) of this farkle on an AE. Will probably rethink this scheme. I determined I'm not a huge fan of amber shift lights!! Leaving tools behind for just this one ride also I bad idea. Thank you Mr. Murphy for the kick in the pants. Ride safe
