I just had my '06 in for sevice today (900miles). They did an oil and filter change along with final drive. I had them check the drive spline and they said it was well lubed. I also had them do a TBS. They said that was very close. On the ride home I noticed that the engine sounded a bit different. at about 2700 RPM I could hear what sounded to my like valve clatter. It is not there below or higher than 2700 RPM. I took it real easy on break in so if it is a problem I don't think that it is anything that I caused. I could use some guidence here and please try to leave the ticker jokes out of this thred as I am scared enough as it is. I hope that I am just being paranoid.

I'll second paranoid. Relax. Enjoy your FJR.

If it is actually some type of problem, it will make itself known in due time.

Rather than to dismiss perceived paranoia, a quick question...

Is the noise present when the motor is cold AND hot?

The reason I ask is fairly simple...the FJR has been known to make a clatter when cold, similar to what you'd expect a coffee can full of BBs being shaken, that goes away when the bike warms up fully. The noise is particulary noticeable during deceleration with the bike in gear.

It's speculated the noise is backfire "popping" in the headers caused by the cold-air injection system combined with a richer mixture during warm-up. The backfire isn't noticeable through the exhaust as the cat-converter is also cold and "traps" the backfire "popping" in the front section of the exhaust system. And since the headers are right behind the radiator, directly under the instrument cluster area, the tupperware funnels the sound right up to the driver.

This noise, if that's what you're hearing, goes away when the bike warms up because the ECU has leaned out the mixture and the cat converter is up to operating temp, burning off unburned hydrocarbons.

Hope this helps some.

The clatter that I hear is definately present when the engine is warm. Not sure yet if it is there when engine is cold as I just noticed it for the first time today while riding.

Hey Crizyal,

Sorry to be nosy, but I'm curious what your dealer charged you for that work, in particular to check the shaft splines. Not sure I want to tackle that on my '05 myself.

If you are running regular gas, maybe you're getting some pinging when cold. Try a tank of super to see if that cleans it up.

Crizyal,

Just for grins, check your oil level. On my first service, it seems they left out a quart - and there was no oil showing in the sight glass.

Needless to say, they added a quart before I left the dealership.
