Stopped by the dealer today and looked at my future FJR. There were some small very slight scratches on the tank next to the seat where some Dufus had sat on it and must have had a jacket with a zipper or something. When I brought it to the attention of the salesman he said they would polish it out (they were shallow). Anyhow on my ST I have the Honda tank pad which does a great job in preventing anything from touching the tank. When I asked about Yamaha tank pads the parts guy informed me that Yamaha doesn't make them for the FJR. :angry2:

They brought up some funky (IMO) "carbon" or "chrome" strips for that area, looked like some damn Zulu insignia or something. You guys have had your FJR's for a while, are there any good "functional" aftermarket tank pads for the FJR? :dribble:

Check Mag-Knight out. You did not mention the year or color of the bike or I would have sent you a direct link.

++ mag-knight. Does what is supposed to do, without adding weight. Looks great too, did mine in carbon fibre pattern.

I just ordered the 2007 Black Cherry match. Risking the 15% restocking fee in case it almost matches close enough. Advertised as 1-2 shades lighter, so there is real reason for concern about the color match. Will post some photos after I receive it.

Not to highjack the thread, but anyone with an '07 using Mag Knight experience a wonky fit with gaps? I ordered the correct model, but some edges--especially where the three lobes come together--aren't sticking down. Is this because it's new & will conform to the tank? Unfortunately I ditched the box & the instructions which I failed to read (how tricky could it be: you just stick it on, right?).

Perplexed,

Actually, no, you don't just stick it on. I heated mine with a heat gun to soften it up then used painters masking tape to hold it down while it took shape. Fits perfect. One thing

You're starting to cost me money Jeff :p I just ordered the Cee Bailey +2 +4, and have been looking at one of these too. Now I'm just gonna have to wait to see your report/pics on the color matching and spend even more money

That would explain it: thanks.

If you are interested, Geelong Carbon Fiber Craft, in Australia, make tank protection as well.

What else are forum friends for, if not to dig deep into each other's wallets?

:)

I'll have to take some pictures and offer-up a review from my picky-ass daughters. I'm partially colorblind and will probably never see that they send me a green instead of Black Cherry.

Anyone tried THIS?

I have a Nelson Rigg bag and the underside isn't as paint friendly as I'd like.

I'm looking for a way to protect my paint on the tank top from my often stupid, careless self. Seems like a good product and a google of other motorcycle forums all say the above works as advertised. My issue is, however the tank kit does not cover the high spot on the tank where the bag rides and the 'tank bag user' configuration only covers where the body of the bag sits, not the magnet wings that settle near the tuning fork star and the raduis of the knee pocket to tank top. this leaves 4 of the 6 magnets with no clear plastic under them. In all fairness, the major protection is for the compartment floor where its soft and moves, and objects inside may make pressure points, the wing magnets don't exactly move alot so the vibration marring would be minimal, but again, I'm an idiot. Anyone got a solution to this?

I've seen the mag-knight on a bike in the past, great product, but only covers the body-contact parts of the bike... not really what I need.

The Tank-Slapper kit and Luggage Locker should work very well. Luggage Locker is a tank bag that mounts to the filler trim ring on the tank. The whole bag sits above the paint, not on it. Or you could find a shop to install 3M Stone Guard on the exposed tank parts.

Mag Knight makes something for the top of the tank. Check it out here. You can even buy the tank bra and top cover as a package and save money. Use Paypal and save even more.

I thought about the Tankslapper route when I was getting the FJR. But I heard the stuff can be a pain to put on and make it look right.

Thanks for the link. Man that mag-knight tank top kit is pricey. 45 bucks for a silver one and it doesn't even cover as much as the tankslapper bag kit.

I've applied many a MX bike side number plate kit, it can't be harder than that. From what I understand it's got no adhesive either, so it attaches like the little Grease Monkey oil change reminders on my car window. I'll just peel it up if I don't get it right.

The Search continues....
