What's the collective experience with these things?

They do not seem to have been very popular, though I can't see exactly why. Maybe they were a bit ahead of their time?

I've got a line on a '82 850 at a very attractive price.

Could this be the adventure sport demon of my dreams?

PS - yeah I know I'd need to do some major farkelation. And accessories are scarce for am un-obtanium model such as this. But think how cool it would be to be the only kid on the block with an old skool TDM?

Fred,

I actually bought one as a back up bike. But since there was not much of a following here (they are hot in Europe), does not have a good website like this one, and Parts were not easy to find, turned it in for the FZ1 instead.

Which then morphed into the KTM 950 Adventure...the narly twin.

See if you can find parts and tires for it before you make the commitment. It is a nice riding bike.

good on ya Smitty HiYo

Like the Honda TransAlp, I see one every once in a while but the owners are "married" to them....or at least going steady because they love them.

Good advice.

Yeah, there is a forum for the bike. Carpe TDM Seems more focused on the newer TDM 900 model (which never got exported to the USA) so naturally it is centered in Yurop.

On rethinking my goals for an adventure bike, I'm going to want to take this thing out into the hinterlands.

Having one that, should it break down somewhere out on tour, would be hard to find parts for seems counter-intuitive to the mission. It's actually the same reason I am hesitant to go with a Multistrada or, to a lesser extent, Triumph Tiger (though a nice girlie is still a possibility) I should probably just be patient and hold out for a V-strom.

Had a roommate with one eons ago and he liked it. An '82 would be suspect for anything made of rubber or with a seal and you're already aware of the parts situation.

We've noticed the low prices on early Tigers (both steamers and girlies) for the college age son. The Triumph parts situation is all mail order but at least the parts are available so that isn't putting me off. It's just hard for me to justify, as the KLR is such a great college run-around for a 6'3" kid.

But in great rides with little needed work the Stroms really have our attention and I'm watching for a "cleaner upper."

I know what you mean about the KLRs. You just cannot beat them for overall value.

But the bike I'm looking for has some specific requirements, one of which will be to tour on road, 2-up sometimes. Hence the Man-strom or Girlie being on the short list. I'd also go for a GS but they want too damn much dough for them even when they are old and beat.

Another consideration is, I'm sick of fiddling and cleaning carbs almost every spring. Even with proper winterizing (fuel stabilizer), eventually you know you're going to have the carb tear-down blues. I like that both of the bikes in the garage right now have FI, and it sure would be nice for the 3rd one to also.

edit- I'm also lucky in that we have 2 decent Triumph dealerships here in NH. Great Bay in Hampton and Second Wind in Merrimack. Either of them can get parts. Of course that wouldn't help out on the Haul Rd. ;)

"Sieze the Carp -- Eh" (NOT)

I bought a Tedium new -- it was on the dealer's floor, new un-sold, going on its 3rd summer (I bought it for a song).

There's a reason why they didn't sell well -- and the magazine testers panned them. The engine's a dud -- basically the 360* crank/firing order just doesn't do anything sporting. (the later, new, Euro, others have 'staggered' 90*/270*, F.I., etc. -- and may be great?) The steel delta-box frame is "hell for stout" but the bike is NO Dirt-Bike (at least I couldn't ride it off-road much -- not much more than an FJR). The 3rd, middle, intake valve had its clearance always going away and regular maintenance was busy and trouble-prone.

I put 34K miles on it and was glad to see its tailight go down the road...

Hi Fred,

I love those bikes. There are two of them here in Nova Scotia sitting at a dealer shipped in from Europe. Let me know if you want the contact info. You could buy it and I could ride it home for you.

Canadian FJR

Lol!! Thanks Scott!!

Are these the 900's? (edit - must be) Wonder what they want for 'em.

I'm thinking I need to restrain myself and wait for what I want.

But you know how it is when you sell one bike, you get that itch...?
