J&B has a Communication Unit that fits on the left handle bar that has a CB built into it, the question is HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU GUYS THINK HAVING A CB IS OR DO YOU EVEN HAVE ONE ? With all the new "instant on" radar the cops have now, I was wanting some feedback as to how they've helped you in avoiding Speedtraps. Anyone use Police Scanners in COMBO with a CB? Love to here what you have to say about it before I spend a bunch of cash for something worthless...

Police scanners are useless anymore with digital communications. CB's can be usefull if you can understand WTF the truckers are saying. I can't. Common sense, eyeballs, and a good radar detector are invaluable on the open road IMHO. With the right terrain, for example I 80 across Nevada, instant on isn't all that much harder to detect than constant on. You'll pick them up miles in advance as they "instant on" other people. In my experience most cops have their stuff on all the time anyway.

zzkenoman has a police scanner and he thinks it is quite handy.

It alarms if a leo is in the area (radar off) if I recall the range is about 3 miles.

Technically what it is picking up is the radio system a leo uses (transponder in the trunk)

Everytime dispatch sends out a call or anyone talks it goes off (or so I understand)

I forget the model he has but it is a bearcat.

He also runs radar with a little common sense & seems to keep out of trouble (for the most part :) )

Casino's, that's another story...

Police scanners are illegal in motor vehicles in my state, I've been told.

You'll be less likely to get busted if you avoid main highways. If you're riding longer distances and want to take the main higways, riding at the speed of other traffic is better, IMO....

For LD highway cruising, I wouldn't leave home with out it. In the hinterlands, where cells don't work and you need to contact someone for help, a CB may be your only hope - besides getting the tips where LEO hangin' out.

Globalstar is an obvious option, if you're in the hinterlands....and they can be rented for as little as $20 per week...

I have a J&M on my FJR and love it. I have the 3 foot antenna mounted off the licence plate and I get pretty good distance on it. I use the CB to keep me entertained on the highways durning LD travel. Also, piping music through it works great. I just hook up my MP3 player and away I go. The music mutes each time someone on the CB talks or you talk. I think the J&M product is a great investment, IMHO. Had it on my last bike and now this one. Go ahead and get one. Just make sure you get the good speaker/headset. B)

Well, I can say for sure that a CB is invaluable on the interstates. When the truckers say, "There's one in the middle at the 55" they mean there's a LEO in the median at the 55 mile marker. Or they may simply say, "Full grown rollin' northbound at the 143" which would mean that there's a state police patrol at the 143 mile marker. They always talk. If all else fails you can just ask for a road report. Most truckers enjoy talking with a biker. Most of the time they will ask questions about your "crotch rocket."

The CB has saved my butt numerous times.

I used the J&M CB/intercom/audio controller for my 2005 FJR. It's an excellent system that can intergrate virtually all your audio, cell phone and radar detector needs. I used the CB radio as a communication means between other riders (assuming they have CB radios). For speeding tickets and warning of police presence you can't beat the combination of a good radar detector and a radar laser jammer. There are other systems out there that are cheaper and they work. I don't think any of them sound as good as the J&M setup.

Unless you're travelling in a state (like Delaware, for example) where the entire state-wide radio system is digitally trunked and transponders/repeaters went the way of the Dodo long ago.

Me, I carry my police ID - it works better than any radar detector I've ever seen.

Except in the south, where it doesn't work at all.

The object here is not to get stopped and have to show anything. Of course having a badge is better than not having one but still no guarantee.

Nobody is beyond the law......................

Now that that was said...........

The Escort 8500 and the Valentine-1 works well
