Im planning for my august trip. I want to camp some to save money, This will be a 3 week trip so I would like some suggestions on a econonomical tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag that packs up small to strap on the fjr.

Good threads on this subject; hppants started the best one I can recall maybe a year or so ago. I didn't devote a lot of time to looking for it, but maybe somebody has it bookmarked? Post a linky? There's a LOT of good stuff to have besides the 3 you listed, OP.

OTOH, if "economical" is your main thing, maybe best you don't look at that thread.

*edit* Posted mine before I saw RH's post, and the hppants thread is right at the top of that section now. Here.

Thanks for including the link Mike. I was in a hurry when I was typing, my wife and son were about to starve to death and it somehow became MY responsibility to acquire supper.

Eureka makes good backpacking tents that will stand up to almost all bad weather and will keep you dry as well without draining your bank accounts. I got the medium motofizz bag from aerostich and it fits great on the passenger seat.

I've camped about 300 nights from a motorcycle and the best money spent was on a goose down sleeping bag that packs into a 7x14 inch bag. You can't let a goose down bag get wet so you have to take care packing it but it's worth the extra cost.

Make sure the sleeping bag fits you and will protect in your expected temp extremes! I bought a mummy bag that seemed ok when purchased but is too small and binds, trying to turn over when put into actual use! I was trying to compromise between cost vs makes into a small package for storage.

As mentioned by others, don't skimp on the tent.

If you have an REI store near you it is worth a visit. They sell to backpackers who have a lot of the same needs as motorcycle campers. Their employees are very knowledgeable and can show what to look for in gear. I personally use an REI tent and Big Agnes sleeping bag and pad. I recommend them highly.

While it is really good, REI is one of the most expensive places that you could shop. I'd find what you want & shop for it online. I once bought a tin cup from REI... probably all I can afford there.

Catoma rider or 2up2 tents are sweet. Set up in under a minute. Not cheap but definitely worth the money.

By the time you spend the money to buy camping stuff, you could probably just have spent that on a hotel. I guess it depends on what you already own and know how to use, and what you have to buy.

Helinox makes an awesome cot. When we were in Moab, one of the stores had them on sale for like $150. Scour the internet, you'll find one for a good price. From what I've seen, that's a way better option than a sleeping pad.

I will also say this: a good tent is very important, if that's all you have and are absolutely depending on it. I have a cheap Ozark Trail 2 person dome tent that we got at Walmart. Cheap, very light, very small, and perfect for a guy and gear. Since you will have the option to camp, or look at the weather and think a hotel is better, maybe go that route. A small tarp helps keep the bottom dry; although, I've never had an issue with water coming in that tent. Also never used it in a downpour. Lol...

As soon as you say camping around here, people like to pretend they are hiking Mount Everest. You are not. Get stuff that isn't crazy expensive and can be easily replaced if broken or lost. Except for the sleeping bag and pad or cot. Make sure those two items are comfortable and do not forget a shovel.

Yes, while it is true they may be more expensive than purchasing online, there are times I place value on being able to evaluate the stuff first hand. If I recall when I bought my sleeping bag there was less than a 10 buck difference between REI and online.

REI is one of the best places for returns if you don't like something, even after you've used it. Plus you could sit outside with your tin cup and see if you can offset the price difference. :)

Never bought here, but they sell used camping gear:

And of course there's Amazon and EBay...

I don't think I'd buy a used sleeping bag, but a used tent, or other camp gear, yes.

Another option ...if it's still available out there ....is to rent the gear. Don't know if REI does, but EMS does:

Years (and years) ago we rented tents, a stove, and some other gear for a week long hike through the White Mountains in NH.
