A few weeks ago, three of us circumnavigated the Great Lakes to knock an item off a friends bucket list. I rode 3600 miles in 7 days, 4 hours. Crossed the border 6 times, played two rounds of golf (with rented clubs), stayed on an Island, saw one deer, no moose, 4 police cars (no tickets). I started in Tabernacle NJ (near Philly)rode to Rochester NY, met a friend, and rode to Ludington Mi, to get our third rider coming in on the ferry from WI. Rode up the east coast of Lake Michigan, on Rt 22. Great road. Stayed in Saulte Ste Marie, MI. The Lockview Motel was very motorcycle friendly. The Soo Brewery wasn't bad either. 80 miles north on the east coast of Lake Superior is Batchawana bay. A great point to stop for breakfast. The east side of Superior was a very nice road. Not technical, but godd vistas, and high speed sweepers. It gets a little boring over the top of the lake into Thunder bay. There is a town call Bayfield WI, on the southwest corner of superior. Took the ferry from there to Madeline Island. Both hotels were full, but scored a 3 bedroom condo from the folks at the inn for $240. Great bar called Tom's burned out cafe, and the food at the inn was great. Great sunsets too. Golf the next morning at the Madeline Island Golf Club, where they opened up early just to get us out. We shot back through the UP, and down the east side of Huron. Over the top of Lake Onterio, and ended up in Alexandria Bay, on the east tip of the lake. The Ship Motel had a great rate, and bike friendly. Final leg wss back to NJ. The weather was great (except for leaving my family home to deal with Hurricane Irene). In any case,a great trip, and the FJR (2005) ran like a champ. What a machine.
